I mean i know he can help us a bunch but i mean a lot of the problems we had this year, we kind of always had with Payton too. Things just was more glaring this year. Not saying Payton's not a great coach or anything, i'm just not sure he's going to walk back into locker room and we're a 13-3 and get to nfc championship game again.

I don't think you are. It's obvious one of the biggest issues the team had this year was discipline. Another huge issue was teams adapting to last years offensive system, and Payton will find creative ways to get Jimmy Graham back up to the elite status of receiving tight ends. Darren Sproles was nowhere near as effective without Payton.

I think we are expecting too much just like most didn't expect to skip a beat when he was suspended. I guess that's just the way fans think

Look at all the missed tackles, blown blocking assignments, and Drew Brees trying incredibly too hard all the time.

He actually had a higher reception rate per target this year. 14 less receptions and close to 350 less yards. Teams limited his downfield effectiveness.

Teams weren't forced to treat him as the incredible threat he can be. He lost effectiveness as both a runner and a decoy.

I just think overall there was a lack of adaptability on the offensive side of the ball, and Drew having to force passes into tighter coverage this year was evidence of that.

Thats all true, but those are all offensive issues. We were still 3rd in scoring this year.

Defense has always been the Saints downfall under SP. Payton doesn't line up and rush the pass rusher, play corner, outside linebacker, or safety.

The problems are the same as they've always been.

That is true too, but I think Payton is also a very good judge of talent, and is as good as Belichick in maximizing talent on both sides of the ball.

I'd go as far as automatic playoff contention. We know there is more than 7 win talent on this team.

7 to 10-11 is absolutely nothing in the NFL, just this year...

Colts 2 to 11 wins
Broncos 8 to 13
Redskins 5 to 10
Vikings 3 to 10
Seahwaks 7 to 11
Rams 2 to 7

Every year there's usually 5-6 of these big turnarounds. Historical turnover for playoff teams is about 5 a year if remembering correctly.

Just take one Panther game, the Chiefs loss, plus one more and there ya go for 5th or 6th seed this year.

I agree that him walking back in the locker room won't come with a flash of light that evolves the Saints back into a super bowl team overnight. But his absence was a huge factor in this year's outcome.

That being said, I can't see anything that would keep us from winning 10 games or more next season with CSP being back around. Nothing but the defense that is. The D has to improve by leaps and bounds before they can get back to true form.

I think it will improve. And maybe with Sean pushing it will help. But him coming back is only a minor factor when it comes to defense.

Our offense struggled alot this season too. Not nearly as much as the D, but it struggled at times. It was a team season. And it was a bad one.

Only good things can come out of him coming back. But I'm not looking for some sort of miracle either. I'm just happy he's coming back and taking the first step to getting the Saints back on track. Hopefully, the defense will find it's way. Time will tell.

I'm ready for next season already. I want to watch the offense tear through people again.

I would expect a small step back from what he has built up to in the last two years. Perhaps 10 wins and a playoff berth.

Hopefully the following year, his return will have them back to 12-13 wins/season.

With Payton this years team, even with the bad defense, most likely wins 4-5 more games. Next years team, with Payton back, a moderate improvement on D, a normal offseason, and a slightly easier schedule, there's no reason to think the saints won't be a juggernaut next year.

I don't think thats expecting to much.
Thats just how talented they are.

I think payton is good enough to get us back to the playoffs, but with this defense, I wouldnt look to get too far.

I think some are expecting too much, I expect 10 wins and the playoffs. If they get some difference makers on defense somehow, could be 13-3

Yes i think we are we cant help that though. Lets say we win 10 games next year it doesnt mean we are 3 games better than last b/c we all know that football games can be lost in so many diff. ways

This is true. But there's also alot of ways to win games. And CSP can only help that happen.

The motivation of him being there and all of them wanting revenge would be enough to at least spur us into the playoffs IMO. We're a few great defensive draft picks from being setup for a run.

JMHO.
