When it wasn't even a playoff team the year before and you lost your head coach. I would say lessons learned but no. More of the same next year.

The idiocy of the trade was doing it weeks before the draft. You just don’t do that. You have no idea who will be there at that time, and the only way it makes sense is to plan to package that to move up high into the draft. That’s done only for a QB.

Smart traders wait for the draft to see who is falling and then target trades accordingly. The Saints just played the game of treating draft picks like Monopoly money

IMO, Trevor Penning looks like a great LT of the future and they (Loomis) always planned on recouping that first round pick when trading Sean Payton's rights

The smart idea was actually what they did on draft night. move up for olave.

the stupid idea was to get 2 picks to go all in this year.

olave wasn't the 'mortgage next year' pick. it was actually the first one with philly to get the 2nd 1st.

Honestly we should be if we had a coach staffing that was competent. Saints clearly outplayed several teams we ended up losing to.

They aren’t recouping a pick. They are getting something for Payton, but we have no idea what that would be. If it’s a first then that would be a 5th and a 10th for us in 2023.

As for Penning he may be good. 1. they had no idea if he or anyone else would be there at that spot, and 2. they gave up a lot to be in that spot with no idea who would be there.

The trade they made set them up to trade up in 2022, which they did to grab a WR. They played the draft like a team that was only 1-2 lives short of a super bowl roster rather than a broken roster that needs multiple spots filled. On top of that they played it with terrible strategy. It was a crap shoot trading that early in the process, and that’s just the facts of it.

Agreed. The trade for Olave was a good one, but the difference is they did it on draft day when a player they wanted fell within reach.

The dumb play was making the trade with the eagles two weeks before the draft. As you state, they left themselves with shite this year.
