I’m loath to give the league credit on anything it does, but the did solve a real problem with draft pick holdouts.

The system is much better now with rookies largely being slotted in clear contract value.

Maybe it’s not good for the rookies, but those contract holdouts were so stupid.

Was going to post the same. So glad they fixed the holdout BS. Was tiresome and everyone but the agents hated it.

I'd be pissed as a veteran player to see rookies making more than me based solely on potential.

It's wasn't even just that. Bradford, the last number 1 pick to get an unslotted deal, was one of the highest paid players in the league (top 10 in aav iirc at the time of signing).

It really did become unfair to teams and veterans what the rookies were making before ever playing a snap. For teams it was FAR too much risk and could even be cap crippling if you constantly picked high, and for vets they were getting a much smaller piece of the pie the higher the rookie contracts got.

After that happened with Bradford everyone (but the rookies) were in agreement it needed to be changed.

It never should have been a thing to begin with. Rookies who never played a snap in the pros making as much or more than multi-year vets was so obviously stupid that allowing it to go on for so long makes those involved look totally inept. Jamarcus Russell signed a 6 year, $61 million contact in 2007. Tom Brady was on a 6 year, $60 million agreement. How retarded is that?

That's a weird pic to use, but there probably weren't any available where Bama wasn't holding...
