The #Saints are giving WR/PR Deonte Harris (now Deonte Harty) the second-round RFA tender, per source. He could still draw some interest on an offer sheet.
-Tom Pelissero
SAINTS WOULD GET SECOND ROUND PICK if they don’t match another team’s offer sheet.

The Saints are placing a second round tender on Deonte Harty, per source. The price tag — $3.986 million. Because he was undrafted, if another team signs him, they would get a third round pick as compensation.

I’m dumb, can someone explain how this works/what this means?

He's an RFA.
If someone signs him to an offersheet and the Saints don't match, we get a 3rd round pick. If we hadn't placed a tender on him he could walk for free. There are varying levels of tenders.
If no one signs him to an offersheet, he plays the year on a 1 year deal at that amount (assuming the Saints don't ink him to a long term deal)

This doesn't make sense. Is she saying the Saints get a 3rd round pick w/ a 2nd round tender just because he was undrafted; or is she saying the team that signs him has to give us their 2nd and gets a 3rd in exchange?

They have to give us a third round pick. That’s it.

read it again, they tendered him as 2nd round so we get a 2nd round pick for him not a 3rd

Yes.
If they had placed a 1st Round tender on him they would get a 2nd. He wasn't picked in the 1st or 2nd round, he was a UDFA. That's how it works to my knowledge.

I don't think this is the case. I will look again.

He took a huge step last year. Im worried about his healthy, ability to take so many shots. I still think we need to let Trequan walk and find a legit #2 and a starting TE.

That’s not right. Same thing would have happened with Taysom.
First round tender but could only have gotten a second round pick, because wasn’t drafted in first round.

Thanks, getting the 3rd for a 2nd round tender threw me off. Then Kat's phrasing (I know she used the comma correctly) really through me for a loop bc I automatically connected a 2nd round tender w a 2nd round pick.

“Upgraded tender: If a team places a first-round tender on a player who was selected outside of the first round, it can only receive a second-round pick as compensation for any of its other RFAs who were first-round draft picks. The same is true for the second-round tender”
-Kat Terrell
It’s a probably a moot point, cause we will never get to that point where we’re taking a draft pick.

You could also place an original round tender where the saints can match but get no compensation if he leaves

same here, i thought the tender decided the compensation rather then where he was drafted
so if true then that means if we second round tender a player drafted in 7th round we still only get a 7th round pick for them

It ain’t the case … him being undrafted makes a 2nd round tender a 3 round pick
