So at the end of the day, the Saints still have a lot of work to do after this contract restructure with Thomas. Over The Cap’s estimates have New Orleans in the red by more than $38.7 million.

38 mil isn't bad at all. Loomis might bring in a decent QB.

We were 70mil over the cap this time last year. 38mil ain’t shite

After watching last week and today, I want carr and Greg Olson package deal. Carr was quite good under Olson

it's on Loomis
that's the decision maker without Payton's influence.

Here's some easy fixes...
MT Post June 1 cut/trade: Saves 1.165mil
Peat Post June 1 cut/trade: Saves 11.825mil
Winston Post June 1 cut/trade: Saves 12.8mil
Jordan: restructures saves 10mil
Lattimore: restructures saves 10mil
Ramczyk: restructures saves 10mil
Kamara: restructures saves 8mil
Davis: restructures saves 6mil
Gives us 30mil in cap space to spend.
The reality is, the restructuring and how Loomis & co go about contracts only bites you if said player (i.e. Michael Thomas) underperforms or can't stay healthy. If they do, than it doesn't matter much because you're just borrowing future money.
That being said, it also delays hoarding money (like chicago) and clicking rebuild right away. I imagine with the division being up for grabs, I don't see us rebuilding but retooling.
We're talking you need to replace:
3 DE/DT (Davenport, Onyemata)
1 LB (Ellis)
1 WR (Thomas, Landry)
1 OL (Peat)
1 QB (Winston, Dalton)

If it only saves a million, why would you cut Thomas?

if you dont cut him, his restructured contract the "32mil bonus" into 2024 becomes guaranteed

Need to figure out how to retain Elliss

Is that deadline to cut before that bonus this offseason or next offseason?

Why not cut him if all you're doing is paying him to sit on the IR every season.
I firmly believe Thomas' restructuring is a sign that Loomis looked at trading him but his contract was too ugly for any team to bite on basec on his injury history.
IMO no way the team lets that 32mil bonus become guaranteed. They'll cut ties with him and let him sign somewhere ae a FA. That's the best option of both sides. So what if it adds dead money to the cap, Thomas' contract is dead money right now because he contributes nothing to this team.
