So, he's not in shape, got it.

Like, I need to lose 10 pounds. I don't need to lose 20, and I guess that's good - but I still need to lose 10.

The issue at play is you have two bench guys starting, two that haven’t even played this season, and a third whose the biggest piece out of all of them in Trey who hasn’t played but could be viewed as a starter or bench guy, but he will play starters minutes regardless.

It’s a tale as old as time but this team has to get healthy. Probably won’t happen, but you have to keep saying it I guess.

Zion with some good comments after the game
Did he address his defense effort through the 1st 9 games of the season?

Other than him conceding he needs to give more effort on that side, don't see it as good comments.

And hell, even if he said exactly that, it's meaningless until he does to on the court on the defensive side of the ball.

Right now, bench is the biggest problem next to rim protector shortly after. We have too many minutes injured. People need to step back and take a breath.

Have you seen the last two games? He’s been giving WAY more effort on defense, poking the ball away, hitting the glass grabbing rebounds.

The effort on that end is definitely getting way better than early season, at times late yesterday he started slacking off, but can’t really blame him when the refs called every little time he would touch someone.

We’ve been waiting for this going on 5 years now. It’s ridiculous you are excusing it to the extent you are. He’s a professional and not living up to his continuous obligation of being in basketball shape.

You know how you get in basketball shape?

By playing basketball.

Year two he looked great, last season after a month he played at MVP level and was top 5 in MVP polls before his injury.

Hard to remain in basketball shape when you have those injuries, and it takes a little time, but you can see he’s getting better every single game.

Look I think Zion is trying harder and putting more effort into things than years past but he only has himself to blame for the positions and injury issues he’s endured.

I’ve realized Zion is the point of contention here bc there is a difference in level of expectations from fans :

Some say he”s still working himself into shape and that’s okay . Others say he’s fat (he is) and out of shake which is unacceptable .

Some say his Effort is improving on defense and he’s getting some rebounds now . Others expect more than a minimal amount of effort in those areas from the jump.

Zion is not one of the problems for this team . The max contract # 1 pick in year 5 that has yet to finish a season is a pretty big red flag

The list goes on…

Nobody is saying this isn't true. And you should be frustrated, but sadly, you also should expect this because it's how it's been his entire time in the NBA. Him not getting injured is more important than him taking a month of games to ramp up. If he can stay healthy then the ramp up is something you can overcome.

Last year he dropped his parents for professionals. This year he seems to have dropped the fake persona and letting others speak for him or put words in his mouth. Hopefully we're seeing change and maturation and this is the last year we have to worry about the shape issue being this bad. Some people rag on him for his current domestic situation, but that's the most likely thing to make him turn it around. When you're a new parent you usually don't have time to lay around on the coach eating Doritos and Dew all day.

He hasn't been good this season at all.

Horrendous on defense.

Well below efficient scoring. I'd ask what has he done well this season or shown improvements on, because honestly, I'm not sure there's much you can point to.

The hope is he'll play himself into shape like last season. It shouldn't have to be like that but if that's the case, we at least know we'll get a better version of him at some point.

But wouldn't that entail not giving absolutely zero effort right from game 1 of the regular season?

He talked about being called up for effort by his teammates in that final preseason game then game #1 of the regular season, it was right back to Zion not giving one ounce of effort other than when he has the ball in his hands.

Similarly with change as you stated, what he he getting better at? Like I said in my previous post, there's an argument that he's actually not doing anything well right now on the whole. If I asked to objectively show what he has been above average at in his 7 games, what is the answer?

If your name is Zion

Trey and Jose won’t need to play games to get into shape. They’ll be ready the first time they step on the court.

what he he getting better at?

Rebounding for him this game was good, and he absolutely looked like the Zion we've seen in the first quarter.

He also got his first block of the season, in transition defense.

Literally every single player, former player and coach always stresses that there’s being in shape and being in basketball shape, and the only way to get into basketball shape is to actually play basketball.

I await the responses of Jose not being in basketball shape when he comes back. I’ll be on the lookout.

Zion seems to have completely dropped the fake persona. He had some good comments that show self awareness on what needs to get better, including himself. I don't know how many more games until he's in the shape he needs to be in, but when he is, hopefully he takes the reins from BI and starts leading the team.

The motherfricker makes 10s of millions of dollars a year to come in fat as frick and out of shape compared to his peers. He’s not self aware at all. He will never lead the team until he can come into a season in the physical condition he needs to be in.
