I think the "injury" thing that everyone cites as to why they won't do it is just an excuse to avoid a PR hit.
There's no reason for Lebron to do it, if he wins, it's expected, if he loses, he'll trend on social media for it. For a dude that has so carefully cultivated his image, I totally get why he doesn't want to do it.
For Zion, if he goes out there and wins it, all the talk about him being fat immediately ends, full stop. He could benefit heavily from a great showing. Same with Ja (someone mentioned how he would never do it), all the gun shite goes firmly in the past if he wins it and it would be a marketer's dream to play up the "overcame a troubled past" angle.

quote:Certainly. If you have such grave concerns about being injured doing 5 or 6 dunks, then you have some serious issues trying to get through an 82 game season and postseason.

quote:All true, but again, there's also no downside either. If Lebron did the dunk contest in, say, 2005 and did not win, there is not a single thing he'd be missing out on right now that the dunk contest cost him. I also don't view 2 hours of social media ridicule from Twitter eggs as a downside. Like the injury thing above, if that is something you feel like is soooo important to avoid, then that player probably doesn't have the mental to get through a playoff grind.

No upside, no downside. It's just a contest for fun, no need to overthink it like Lebron did.

That fat lazy frick will never have to worry about the dunk contest then.

That's not true.
Zion at an All Star event winning the dunk contest would be a HUGE redefinition of him as a player and a star.

I will say that that might be true. If he won it in an All-Timer type fashion, that could be.
So I will retract the statement

NBA today just did Zion’s top dunks throughout his career. Let the hype train begin.

Disagree...the first star to do this in forever.
In turn it builds up his profile a bit and he may actually start getting some calls from the refs

I'd love to see him in it, but not at this size because the explosion just ain't the same. If he comes into next season close to Duke form, shite is a no brainier. Low key, I actually think not making the all star team might motivate him to drop some major weight in the off season. His explosion is affected by the extra weight, and I hope he notices he can't blow past dudes as good as he normally does right now.
He still hasn't executed a clean spin step to get away from a defender and his spin step was unstoppable every season before this one. I think he pulled one off last game and made the bucket, but he didn't get much separation.
If bro slims down to Duke size (285 is literally perfect for him and he's been over 300 for a while now) then I'm 100% sure he will make the AS team and he will do the dunk contest.

Jaylen Brown is leaps and bounds more of a star than Zion right now.
