Given Zion's status and importance to marketability of the Pels, he was going to be a focal point of the offense, possibly to the detriment of some players, most notably, Ingram.

With him out, I believe the team can further incorporate Ingram into the offense along with Hart and NAW, having to be relied upon more for scoring. Also, we get to see if Melli is a significant contributor or if we need to get reinforcements in the frontcourt (which may have been needed anyways with Hayes not seeing the floor much in the preseason). Also, Hayes appears to now be needed and his development is accelerated out of necessity, if they choose to play him regularly now.

I believe we can be a +.500 team until Zion is ready to return and can evaluate Ingram's value to the team more bc he is now needed to be a primary scorer for us to survive. I also believe the rest of the team will pick up the slack, sans rebounding, and we will show just how much depth we have on this roster.

When December rolls around, I think we will be pleasantly suprised at the team's record and excited for the remainder of the season due to the inclusion of Zion. We will be better for this in the long run, bc we will know how to handle our star going down for future occurences. Go Pels!

Ingram is going to incorporate himself into this offense whether Zion is there or not. He’s in a contract year after all.

This is completely irrational. You are setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you genuinely believe that we're going to be over .500 during the first quarter of the season WITHOUT one of our top scorers then you must also believe that a fully healthy pelicans team is a second round/conference finals caliber team.

Even being .500 WITH Zion for the opening stretch was going to be incredibly difficult.

If we had an easy schedule to start the season, this take would be slightly less wrong, but it would still be very wrong. But with the teams we have to play at the beginning of the season, we are going to have a very difficult time staying anywhere near .500 with Zion out. It's not impossible, but it isn't likely.

What's weird is that Griffin just said that maybe this could be a blessing in disguise.

Disappointed to see the lack of confidence in the rest of the team. And yes, I did expect this team to be a 2nd round type of team.
Guess we will see, but I got us winning tonight, rather easily. We are similar to Toronto in depth and lack of star talent. This is not the playoffs. Our depth will be an advantage throughout the season.
Watch for Jrue, Ingram and Hart to go off tonight. NAW and JJ will be significant as well.

any or all of those things would have happened WITH zion, and are not made more likely by his absence

This just isn't realistic.

Year 1 of a total rebuild and your expectation is to match the best seasons in franchise history.

not for the reasons OP said. He just said he’s a firm believer in things happening for a reason. It’s just hopeful wishing

Well I dont see this as a classic "rebuild." I see this as what Demps wanted to accomplish when comprising young vets to play around A. Davis except you have better players surrounding Zion...

AD's team: Jrue, Gordon, Evans, Anderson, Aminu, Asik, D. Cunningham, Rivers, A. Morrow, J. Smith...

Zion's team: Lonzo, Jrue, Ingram, Favors, Redick, Hart, NAW, Moore, Jackson, Okafor, Melli...

Its not even a question that Zion's TEAM is better than AD's early teams. Period. You have 10 players who could be considered veterans with 3 years or more playing experience and NAW plays like he's a 3 year vet as well.

Again, we may not have a no-brainer All-Star, but Jrue and Ingram (right before his bloot clot injury) can be considered fringe All-Star types. If Lonzo, Favors and Redick play as expected, I dont see why we can't win games that we may be expected to lose and win the ones we are expected to win.
Dont sleep on what this team is capable of... If it was Zion and nobody else, yall wouldnt be as dejected behind Zion's injury. The reason his injury stings is bc we have playoff expectations due to the quality of this roster.
I still say we make the playoffs, just a lower seed, which may mean not making it to the 2nd round if its 7th or 8th, but I still say we are solid without Zion.

No. Nothing about the injury is a good thing. However, something that we can be positive about is the depth this team has. It doesn't have to just be one guy carrying the load each night. I'm excited to watch them play together and grow.

It will be even more fun to watch getting to add Zion to this team when he gets healthy.

@cgrand, was responding in general to the negativity in the room... This scenario is the very reason we should have been excited at what Griffin has done. When AD went down, we knew we couldnt win games. I fully expect to win a considerable amount of games when and if Zion and Jrue, are out for an extended period of time.
We got depth, well what better time to show it than from the start? Jaxson bout to ball on these bi$#es... #JHayes4MVP.

very important post.

Because zion seemed unstoppable and likely to work on his game, the sky was the limit.

We imagined both laker stars limping off the floor for 20 games each, klay taking a year to get back, pg13 out for a while, and boom, pels sitting at 6, maybe 5.

Nevermind that stats say pels with zion winning only 38.5 games.

Imho they were more likely to be in last week grapple with the leftover warriors and the dallas duo with 8th place up for grabs.

Saints fans are currently witnessing multiple players/units step up in the face of adversity due to injury to a key star.

I guess we'll know shortly in a few hours if the Pels follow that recipe for success because they have the potential talent to surprise some peeps, even Pels fans.
