As someone who has struggled with their weight and played sports their whole lives, I can promise you that dealing with recurring injuries plus the kind of ridicule Zion got from his peers can have a big impact. Hopefully, it's an updated version what Charles Barkley describes happening to him when he came into the NBA at 300-pounds. Barkley, no shrinking daisy, said Moses Malone calling him "fat and lazy" as a rookie made him cry. We don't have a Moses Malone on the Pels, but Shaq and Chuck doing the same thing on national television--on a platform that everyone in the NBA watches--may achieve the same thing. As might Zion having to sit in his room in Portland and watch a childhood buddy like Ja Morant blossom into a super star leading his team to the playoffs...

he got pretty darn heavy

This is what worries me is that he's having weight problems as a 21 year old who, despite the injuries, is still working out and being active on pretty much a daily basis.

What happens as he gets older and the metabolism slows down.

Granted that worry only comes into play if Zion is still here by the time he is 29 or 30 and if that is the case, it means something good happened.

Oh absolutely.

It shouldn't be that hard for a 21 year old to get back into perfect playing shape. He's surrounded by the best medial equipment, training staff, nutritionists, etc.

Even if he couldn't participate in aerobic exercises, a proper diet would have him shedding weight in no time (unless he has some sort of medial issue)

This is what should be alarming.

For him to gain that much weight at 21 means either his diet is absolutely atrocious and he never exercised or he has some sort of medical (thyroid?) issue.

I've heard rumors his stepdad was giving him HGH when he was younger (why he's such a physical freak) so maybe that's had something to do with his weight gain but that's speculation.

It’s all on Zion

Some of these people, I don't know if they actually think that they are being funny, or if they are fans of other teams and just trolling.

The only way he lasts that long is that he actually starts taking it seriously. If he doesn’t, he won’t last that long

Yea but y'all are acting like he's been at Nike for months and months. It just hit 2 months. Which he should be able to get in much better shape. But 2 months ain't that long

Yall.

Nike invested too much money into Zion.

I would bet a lot of money someone very close to Phil Knight called Griff and said

"You're fricking up our investment so we're taking him in. Make it seem like your fricking idea. We work in the shadows after all"

Signing with Air Jordan is gonna save this dudes career.

Only $75 million.

That's why I have consistently said in these Zion threads that we will either see a transformed and utterly dominant Zion this season, or we won't see him at all.

There's no doubt that Nike, Gatorade, Mountain Dew, NBA2K, et al want a dominant Zion.

People have acted as though the public narrative of "Zion is fat and lazy" has impacted Zion by hurting his poor little feelings. No, that damage to Zion's image costs him money, because those corporations don't gain any value from being endorsed by him. Seriously, if drinking Gatorade makes Zion a fat laughingstock, is that going to convince anyone else to drink it? Shaq and Chuck's comments hit Zion hard in the pocketbook, because they severely damaged his public image.

At this point, it's not about Zion "coming back." It's about him regaining his public image as the future face of the league, and that doesn't happen if he simply comes back for 20 games and plays like he did last season. He needs to return looking like Godzilla.

Zion played great last season, but he needs to show these corporations that he's eventually headed toward MVP status. He needs to be significantly better than last season.

Don’t just think about it as a guy coming back from injury think about it as a brand relaunch.

Apple doesn’t send out concept art before they debut a new product …

As we all come down from the trade deadline high last week…. there will be a lot media people in Cleveland who need something to discuss….
