No one is saying to move the Pels over the Grizzlies if the playoffs started tomorrow.

This thread is around Woj’s judgement of the Pels/Griz comparative seasons.

Despite all the woes you listed the Pels were only separated by 3 games from the Griz at the time of suspension. In head to head the Pels crushed them(with two more on the way). The only thing that saved the Griz from their schedule moving them out of the 8 seed was the stoppage. As the difference between the two teams largely came down to schedule. Griz had one of the easiest early schedules, the Pels, the hardest. The stoppage occurred right as that began to flip.

If they simply jump into the playoffs tomorrow the Griz get the spot, but the idea that when you contextualize the season you could come to the conclusion the Griz significantly outplayed the Pels is ludicrous.

Pretty obvious that he was asked to push this narrative & I don't blame him for doing it to keep his lines of inside info open. Him pushing this narrative is actually more news worthy than a lot of the stuff coming out currently. Seems like NBA thinks they need to legitimize a playoff field as is which means they currently think they go straight to playoffs or not enough games for Pels to catch Memphis.

I think this board is putting way more thought into Woj’s statement than he did.

Also, we all feel Memphis is a paper tiger that was about to fall back down to earth because we have reason to obsess about other team’s schedules to know that. To everyone else Memphis is a surprise feel good story being lead by the ROY. Even Zach Lowe thought the Pels had zero shot at the playoffs until a few weeks before things shut down when he took the time to analyze the remaining schedule and saw what we all see.

Y’all are overreacting to what was probably a throw away statement from Woj’s perspective. The meat of the news he was breaking was the league returning.

there is nothing more exciting than seeing a great miler reel in the rabbit on the last straightaway.

we have all been denied one of the greatest finishing kicks of all time.

at the time of the virus break, memphis had 5 or 6 guys in street clothes including stalwart brandon clark. they were limping toward the finish line.

with the nearl6y all bums last 15 in sight the Pels were poised for 8th, sure enough, as memphis faced mostly playoff teams.

clarke and justise winslow were due back but both were coming off recurring issues and neither was a sure thing to be 100% day1 back.

this situation is an all time missed opportunity.

5 games is the "plan."
pels 3.5 back.

even if pels get to play 6 vs losers they will probably need to sweep.

with Clarke and winslow, memphis is very deep. their bench is going to clobber any teams bench on cruise control.

looks like 72 and 76 games are on the table.

If they’re gonna throw 76 out there, just finish the whole 82 at that point

When they say 72 or 76 games what does that entail? How many teams?

Woj on ESPN this am. They are talking about either finishing the season or just starting the playoffs at the ESPN complex in Orlando.

An interesting possibility was discussed, but I doubt the east team owners would agree. They discussed seeding the top 16 teams out of the entire 30 for the playoff seeding this year. This would be a one off for this year. To make this a yearly rule would require at least 20 of the 30 teams to agree.

Friend in the league says the LEAST likely outcome is all 30 teams coming to Orlando. Says he doesnt know if they go straight to playoffs (with exhibition games before hand) or if they invite 20-24ish teams and have play in. But he says all 30 teams seems least likely

Personally, I am fine if they go straight to playoffs. I like the idea of Pels feeling screwed over, being angry all summer, avoiding the circus of Orlando and just working on their games with little risk for major injury that could impact next season. Wouldnt be the worst thing

I want Zion/Ingram playing in games that matter. But if they do get screwed, I like the potential chip on their shoulder, us against the world angle.

I still struggle with the fact that all of this happened. It seems so unbelievable.

There's just no reason for teams that have no shot to come back. For TV ratings, the NBA wants to finish the playoffs before the NFL gets going, which means that they need to finish before September 10th, they need to start the playoffs by July 15th, and they don't have time to finish the regular season. And what's the appeal of some Knicks vs Timberwolves game, anyway?

But everyone knows that full-strength Pelicans and Blazers are both better than the Grizzlies. It makes sense for the NBA to put its best teams and players into the playoffs, so I'm really hoping for a play-in tournament, because there is time for that.

Only if there are regular season games, which sounds REALLY unlikely.

My friend told me his odds today are:

1. Go straight to playoffs, 16 teams -- 65%
2. 20-24 teams where bubble teams play in and guaranteed playoff teams have some scrimmage games - 30%
3. All 30 teams - 5%

Although I would like to see the Pels make the playoffs, it would be a big downer to not have home attended game(s). I do think that a full strength Pels team would be more than deserving and would attain the 8th playoff spot in a completed season.

I almost would prefer letting Zion rest and rehab, getting a good lottery pick, improving the roster in the off season, and going into next season full strength.

Playoff experience would be very valuable for Zion, even in the freakish way that this year's playoffs would take place. I don't think that there's any question that making the playoffs is better for the Pels' future.
