Anyone seen a proposed format and seeding in a 22 team playoff?

I think i heard we would have a play in tournament with us playing the Suns in the first round, single elimination.

Second round would be winner or NO/PHO vs Memphis. Memphis double elimination. NO/PHO single elimination.

Thats the part of the bracket that would affect the Pels.

Breaking from Shams:

quote:

The NBA’s 22-team format at Orlando’s Disney World would bring the 16 teams currently in a playoff spot, six additional teams, and include a play-in tournament for the eighth seed, sources said. The play-in tournament would work as follows, according to sources: If the ninth seed is more than four games behind the eighth seed, the eighth seed earns the playoff spot; if the ninth seed is four or fewer games behind, then the eighth and ninth seed will enter a play-in tournament that is double-elimination for the eighth seed and single-elimination for ninth. ESPN first reported the league was working on 22-team models

So not really a play in tournament.

It just boils down to who is scheduled in each team's 8 games.

I feel like this is more confusing than they had they just gone with the group stage idea. This season is going to end up having an unwritten asterisk on it anyway, might as well have had fun with it.

Oh well, the Pels get to play more basketball. Guess I can't complain.

West:

Lakers- 0
Clippers- 1
Denver- 0
Utah- 1
OKC- 0
Houston- 0
Dallas- 0
Memphis- 2
—————
Portland- 0
San Antonio- 3
Sacramento- 2
Phoenix- 1

Milwaukee- 0
Toronto- 0
Boston- 0
Miami- 0
Indiana- 0
Philly- 1
Brooklyn
Orlando- 1
—————
Washington- 2

So these are the all 22 teams and the number of games the Pelicans had remaining against them had the season finished originally. If the eight games isn’t loaded with San Antonio, Memphis, Washington and Sacramento I’ll be annoyed.

I can see something like 2 against the Spurs, 2 against Memphis, 1 against Washington, then a combination of Philly/Utah/Clippers/Orlando for the last three games. The Pelicans shouldn’t be playing teams they’ve already finished season series with

How does this work for the 1-7 seeds? Doesn't this open up a pretty big opportunity for them to throw games depending on who they would want in the playoffs?

I guess they still need the games to get into game shape so maybe I'm overthinking this

I don't know how they plan on doing the schedule but hopefully it works in our favor just as the regular season schedule was setting up to

All 22 teams are playing eight games and they all count toward seeding, so no, teams wouldn’t be throwing games. It’ll still be the traditional 1-8 East/West playoff format once the 8 seed is decided.

So basically, all teams start 0-0. Play 8 games each. If your 8th seed team is 4-4 and 9th seed is 0-8 there will be a play in still? Where 9 has to beat 8 twice to advance or 8 beat 9 once to hold on.
This is how I understand it.

Explains it pretty clearly

No, you start with your current record. Every team plays 8 games, if the 9th seed is within four games of the 8 seed at the end of that, then they have the play-in games. It’s kinda wonky because not all teams will have played an equal amount of games but that’s what it is.

I don't think so.

It is the current record plus 8 games. You have to be within 4 games if you are the 9th seed.

So in this scenario, it’s possible the Lakers don’t make the final 16?

Nevermind, I read that wrong

Owners' meeting to approve set for Thursday.

I'm curious as to how they'll pick this 8 game schedule. The fact that 8 bottom teams are gone I assume won't help the Pels. With our easy remaining schedule, without looking I'm guessing we had more of those easy 8 teams to play than the Grizzlies.

Will those final 8 games be weighted based on the SOS of teams' remaining schedules before this?

I highly doubt it.

But I guess my point is, is there anything in place to ensure the above, or is it random and entirely possible the Pelicans final 8 games could be tougher than the Grizzlies final 8 games?
