Waste our last possession in a tie game with a CJ airball

Also, I don’t get why they held the ball for so long, they were acting like they were holding the ball for the last shot, but instead they initiated offense way to late

Those two air balls he put up were costly.

Game tied we throw up a three. They drive to the basket. Goal or foul. CJ threw up two air ball threes in last minute.

When they were on defense on our last possession Memphis doubled the guy we wanted to take the shot and made him have to give up the ball, but we decided to not double their star (who got every call imaginable the entire night) and let him go one on one with a defender who was rightfully scared to get near him. What could go wrong??

Likely matchups. A timeout would have allowed the Grizzlies to make defensive substitutions. That said, a timeout would have also allowed the Pelicans to make subs to have five shooters. So yeah, should have called a timeout.

Who would have subbed in? That team has no depth. There was absolute no reason not to take a timeout, but its a typical “let them play it out” philosophy by Willie thats has continously burned us.

Some of this may have been discussed in other threads, but I have more issues than that timeout:

1) Dyson, Herb, CJ lineup was murdering Memphis in the 2nd. Why didn't we go back to that at any point in the second half?

2) Why was Ja free to do whatever he wanted without double teaming him to get the ball out of his hand, especially on the final play?

3)When you could see that Ja was physically exhausted, why not have Jose pick him up full court at any time in the 2nd half?

4)They didn't seem to run any plays to get Trey an open shot...why?

5)I know Zion was in foul trouble most of the night, but why no small lineups that proved to be effective for a few minutes at at time? Especially when JJJ was off the court.

I'm sure there are others, but that is what stuck out to me.

There seems to be a lot of "why" with Willie's decisions.

All those would require in-game adjustments by Willie. He has no idea how to do any of those. Its why we consistently blow leads. I’m telling you if Borrego took over tomorrow this would be a top 3 seed in west.

So, you guys agree that some of those things should have been done? I just wondered why, at minimum, doubling Ja would have been a good thing as no one else on Memphis could score. Plus, it was obvious that he was gassed. Dyson and Jose could have taken turns picking him up full court.

Yup agreed but you know whats sad?

I knew when memphis made their run in the third that they would eventually make it close and win this game. Thats largely due to the fact that I don’t trust Willie making the right calls down the stretch. It played out exactly how I expected even though I hope for a different outcome. The fact this keeps happening time and time again, is not solely on players but a lot of it is on Willie.
