There was never a world in which this happens. Most of me wants Zion to sit out until next season and fully heal his foot and the Pels miss the playoffs and keep their pick. But there’s part of me that wants him to come back soon enough to push the Pels to the 6th seed so they can sweep the Grizz in the first round and shut this stupid topic up for good.

Healthier
Better solely because of availability but not a good team overall.

As much as I like Zion’s potential, I think it’s undeniable this team would be more stable and competitive by this point.
It’s hard to really say how much though. Things would be different for sure.
Hypothetically we would probably have been a team running a three guard set with BI at the 4 and Favors at center. Ja, Jrue, Lonzo, BI, Favors. And since Zion isn’t there to be unhealthy at the start of the season, then requiring reincorporation of him back into the lineup, then injured again, our first season is likely more successful.
On the one hand I think that team would be exciting to watch offensively. On the other, it would have the same problem the AD era teams did with not really having a guard heavy focus.
The interesting question is if that team plays better, does Jrue still request out, do we actually get off Favors? It’s when you get to that stuff things get murky, but it’s clear both winning and stability would be better to this point. Long term? Who knows at this point which player would be better to build with.
If Zion comes back as if not missing a beat, stays relatively healthy, doesn’t turn into an AD diva about playing here, the decision becomes pretty clearly Zion…but there are a lot of “ifs” for that to happen that aren’t currently with Ja

What would this board be like without one of these Ja vs Zion questions every other day?

This will never die will it Jesus Christ

We'd probably be 20-25 wins right now with ja due to availability. Defense is still suffering and lack of a true 4 hurts us big time too.

Lol oh boy. Pretty crazy how people were saying ja would never reach the potential of what Zion could, how he peaked as a player (somehow in 2 seasons?) and Memphis is actually better without him but now they are rolling and the 3rd year morant is in the MVP conversation

If you weren’t saying we should draft Ja over Zion at the time, I don’t want to hear this nonsense from you.
We made the right move. And you yourself agree.

quote:Ja is great and getting better. Ja may never be as good as 20 year old Zion was, both can be true.
Lol oh boy. Pretty crazy how people were saying ja would never reach the potential of what Zion could
quote:They're certainly not but statistically, they have been better when he's off the court. Ja has played almost exactly 50% of the Grizzlies minutes this season, and their net rating when he is off the court is twice as high as when he's on the court.
and Memphis is actually better without him
Further, in this season where Ja is an MVP candidate and Memphis is a 3 or 4 seed or whatever, their net rating with Ja on the court is lower than Zion's career net rating. So the Pels are better even in our shite 2 seasons with Zion on the court than the Grizzlies are in this amazing season when Ja is on the court.
Availability is the only argument for Morant over Zion, and for the record, it IS a fair argument to make. There's zero argument that he is better and has more of an impact on winning than Zion does when both play.

It easily could have turned into a Sam Bowie/Michael Jordan situation.
We have the benefit of hindsight now but imagine a world where we picked Ja and he bust and Zion thrives.
The funny thing is the same media that kept saying Zion should have gone back to school would have crushed us for passing on Zion.
There is no scenario where you pass on Zion. Even if we knew what we know now

People are simple minded and prisoners of the moment.
I know its a "15 game sample size" but when point zion was unleashed his numbers were ridiculous
29.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 4.2 APG; shooting 59.0/10.0/66.7 (TS 61.9%); 117 ortg 110 drtg during that span
Ja has grown, he's reminding me of year 3 Derrick Rose (MVP-caliber), but lets not discount that his supporting cast is damn good as well.

Yes- let’s use a sample of 15 games over 3 years.

The amazing part of that debate is that no one ever talks about the guy taken before both of those guys. Nobody ever says, the Rockets should have taken Jordan first in the draft. They already had Sampson. Didn't really need Olajuwon. But they went to the finals two years later and won 2 rings with Olajuqon, so seems like it worked out. But Jordan is no doubt a greater player. So why doesn't anyone ever question Houston's pick?

It’s actually impossible to prove Ja makes the Grizzlies better. Their defense is horrendous every time he joins the team, and it’s pretty good when he is injured. Everyone obviously believes Ja is great and makes them better, but really don’t know how it’s proven with the team this year
