Just curious, do you think staying around 500 is enough to keep him around? I'm wondering what Benson's intentions are - how serious he is about "winning now". Does he have any chance staying past the All Star break, still hovering under 50%?

I wasn't expecting a win against Miami, but watching Monty keep shredding leads in the 3rd is getting pretty aggravating.

I was a child of Benson's 80's/90's Saints teams, and there was a lot of times, looking back, that I assumed he could give a shite less about winning or losing. Did we get the Super Bowl Benson? Or the Billy Joe's/Aaron Brooks/Mike Ditka Benson?

Someone on the team would have to untie Benson's shoes when he's not looking.

It's pretty obvious Benson wants to win sooner than later. And I do think Benson would have no problem eating Monty's relatively low priced and probably team option friendly contract if he decided to go a different direction. The question is do they see a better direction to go. Many of us here like George Karl, but his age is a potential disqualifier. If you want someone to get you through the next 3-5 years he's fine, if you want the next Pop that will be with AD his whole career then Karl isn't the guy. Do you really want to be in the middle of a regime change when AD is coming up on his 3rd contract where he's a UFA? That's one of the potential problems with hiring Karl, and if you don't hire Karl, who out there is better than Monty? I'm sure someone is, but the NBA coaching pool is pretty murky and Benson/Loomis aren't NBA guys.

Another thread on Tigerdroppings may just make it happen.

We are part of social media and businesses are paying attention to social media quite a bit these days. The PT alone doesn't have the power, but I would be surprised if we weren't one of the signals being checked when the marketing/PR department tries to calculate the public sentiment on the team.

If he isnt gone by now, it will be an offseason move. He's inconsistent with an unhealthy team. Thats not an excuse but is in consideration. However, if you lose him, demps may go with. It would be an overhaul of the organization.

It's a wonder Monty hasn't started playing Rivers more

I'll give him that, but it's not gonna save him. We're constantly hurt somewhere. These players know they're in New Orleans. I doubt they really give a rat's arse on hustling back to the court on a constant 50/50 squad. So knowing you're always going to be hampered by players limping around the training room, I think you have to find someone who can win in spite of that.

You can spot him AD's first year. And maybe some of his second. But if they don't start making some noise, the Brow is going to just be counting the days till UFA. And all this time, we're just going along for the ride - another team just floundering in the bubble.

I'll say 38 wins is the cutoff. Above that and he keeps his job, below that and they move on.

That will be 2731 days. He most likely will start a new 5 year contract in 2016/17 and won't be a UFA until the 2021/22 offseason. I'm not saying you give Monty until then though. I'm ready to cut bait if he doesn't show us something this season because I figure you can give 2 maybe even 3 more coaches legit shots between now and then. Even though there is plenty of time, there's no point in wasting that time if you know someone's not the guy.

So you think Benson will accept missing the playoffs? Because I try reading the tealeaves on what his benchmarks are, and I get nothing.

For all I know, he may be content with never making the postseason. He's got a profit margin to maintain, and barring it makes it, he's good to go.

Back then Benson didn't really have many informed people advising him. When he huddled to make decisions it was with his banker and lawyer (Tom Roddy and Stanley Rosenthol or baugh or something). Mora should have been fired well before he quit but Benson was too loyal and his banker and lawyer probably couldn't care less about wins and losses.

Today he's advised by Mickey Loomis and Dennis Lauscha. He also doesn't have the attachment to Williams he had with Mora. Assuming Monty doesn't post some amazing second half numbers and the Pels make it deep in the playoffs I think he'll probably sit down with Loomis and Lauscha and figure out who they could bring in that would be better. Maybe that's Karl. Maybe it's someone else. If I had to guess I'd say it's 50/50 whether Williams will be back next year.

This team wasn't making the playoffs this year no matter who the coach was. I think benson probably realizes that.
