The team was in Win Now mode for pretty much the whole Demps era. Buddy was considered more NBA ready. Also, Jake Madison mentioned in one of his recent podcasts that in Murray's private workout with the team he got lit up by an assistant coach that played college but not in the NBA. They found him being that bad defensively pretty concerning.

He's still pretty bad defensively.

To be honest, buddy can be a solid starter on a playoff team
It just so happens he was on two horribly ran franchises.

hes barely a starter on the Kings tho.

Also I just remember Murray being considered really slow with the ball and worried about his PG ability coming out of college

Yup. Told this story recently. A workout (that shouldn't have happened) significantly influenced the pick. LINK

I can't believe this has never been discussed before.

Sadly, the Pels did not have the advantage of having 4 years of NBA experience to view prior to making their pick back then. Easy to second guess 4 years later.

The thinking was management has been making horrible decisions for the past few years and Anthony Davis is getting sick of it. Let's compromise the future to win now (Buddy was definitely more ready to contribute on draft night then Murray and that's not an opinion). Based on the position you guys were in ya'll had to take Hield... really didn't have another option. Sometimes you make so many mistakes you back yourself into a corner. I'd be wondering about the moves that forced your team to be so obsessed with winning now versus building a team
