I wasnt even thinking about Nielson. Considering Tuscaloosa and the other areas around Birmingham, that's a good sized TV market, but Im curious how much draw a D league team could create to pull people from Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, etc. But that's not unique to Birmingham, Pensacola, Jackson, etc would face the same issues. As you said, Birminghamay has strong corporate support.

I think part of the strategy with the Saints and now the Pels has been to market them as teams of the Gulf South, not just New Orleans or Louisiana. That's why Jackson and Pensacola really made sense because they are close enough to engage new fans via the G-League. Birmingham would provide better corporate/city support for the G-League team and offers a larger TV market to promote the Pels, but less of a geographical draw for fan engagement especially being much closer to Atlanta and Nashville.

I think people need to recalibrate expectations on the “draw” of a D league team.
Having the team (anywhere) is important for player development and the pels are getting left behind here

It’s pretty much a guaranteed money loser if the pels own it unless they put it in the Alario center...any other city expecting it to be a revenue source is insane. now if these cities think that arena development will spur OTHER growth then OK but these games draw friends/family and a few hundred casuals. It’s way worse of a product than minor league baseball

I don't think we're going to get any updates for a while. This is from the press release in October.

quote:

The team is expected to debut in Birmingham in the 2022-23 season following the renovations.

...In an effort to accelerate player development, the team will begin play next season in Erie, Pennsylvania, as the Erie BayHawks, while its permanent home at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) undergoes renovations.

LINK

The BayHawks were the affiliate of Atlanta who will become the College Park SkyHawks next season which I guess clears the way for the Pels version of the Erie BayHawks to remain the Erie Bayhawks like the press release suggests. I wouldn't expect much news until the summer. Once the new GM is in place we'll probably start hearing about staffing of the GLeague team.

From this article about the Hawks arrangement with Erie, it says the Hawks ran the basketball side and some local Pennsylvania people ran the business side of things. Since they're local to PA, I'd expect that relationship to end when the team moves to Birmingham in a few years. LINK

WTF is wrong with the bay center?
doesnt the hockey team already play there?

a new arena for a minor league basketball team is insanity. they are not gonna draw more than 5K or so anyway

is it the pels/NBA pushing for this?

I don't get it either.
Not having a g league team is pathetic.

What are the requirements?
There are good college arenas in every corner of Louisiana.

Pay rent.

The one reason I would hold up Pensacola for new arena is to move team. Makes no sense as things stand.

Yes. It sounds like the Pels are just stepping into the same role the Hawks had of running Basketball Operations. Demps from that press release:

quote:

The opportunity to begin our operations next year in Erie is a great situation for our organization. The infrastructure is already in place, the transition in taking over basketball operations for the BayHawks will be seamless, and it allows us to accelerate our player development program.

Why isn’t Biloxi the obvious choice? It’s close enough that fans from NOLA could travel to, and vice Versa, casinos abound so selling tickets shouldn’t be an issue, and it wlll help build up a better regional presence much like the saints.

It's typically been a money losing venture so what you do is find local politicians who have been looking for an opportunity to screw the local taxpayers to help subsidize things. That's why they need new arenas, so the mayor's buddy with the construction company can launder the taxpayer money.

i thought it was, and certainly the existing arena is fine for the D-league. obviously everyone involved preferred birmingham

Which makes 0 sense. From every single angle, Biloxi is the most logical choice.

F King and Alleva could frick up a one car funeral...

Les Miles is out of control...

Thanks Obama...
