Jrues handle isn't mediocre. He's had some killer behind the back crossovers lately leading to buckets

quote:

Payton helps, but not sure he is a the difference between an extra win or two here or not. Debatable how much Paytons game has looked good because of his own improvement or because he's throwing lobs to Davis....i.e. the Rondo renaissance last year

Have you even been watching the games? Payton has been balling out and it has nothing to do with 'lobs to Davis'

I agree. By this time the last few years, Jrue would have dribbled the ball off his foot 6 times at least. His handle has improved tremendously, and i wish he'd get even more aggressive at taking guys to the paint b/c there aren't many defenders in the league that can stop him from getting there, and even when they do somewhat stop him, he uses his strength to move them out of his way and take the 6 foot jumper.

I'm with you on that as well. He's controlling the offense, and taking what they give him. Frazier can't even make a decent entry pass, or know how to pass or dribble to a spot to make that entry pass easier. We have been playing out of the post in our half court offense. I know it seems simple, but it's not always easy to make the post entry pass, and more importantly, get it to that post player in a good position. Big difference between getting that pass 18 feet from the goal along the baseline, and getting it a step or two in front the block.

the point is that it "is really easy to say" that Payton is a defensive force when you've watched him play 4 games over 5 years

And it's equally easy to say he wouldn't have. Payton was a good defender in college and AD and Jrue both talked up his defensive ability during preseason. AD even went so far as to say he thinks the Pels might have the best defensive back court in the league. If you're going to say something nice just to have something nice to say about your teammate I think you probably pick something a little more generic or that fits his established profile.

I'm not saying I have as much faith in Payton's defense as AD does, but Portland's guards are small and I think his size would have made him much more of a deterrent than Frazier was. I also think he takes pressure off of Jrue which makes Jrue more effective. Not to mention there were many possessions last night where the only apparent "play" they could come up with was Jrue or Randle trying to force their way into the paint. Frazier can run the offense instead of Jrue too, but again I think Payton's size against Portland's smaller guards would have given him an advantage in attacking over Frazier.

Normally I'd be standing right there besides you pointing to the much larger data set, but I'm using a data set that's much more than 4 games. We've seen how big an impact there is going from a fringe NBA player to just a competent back up. It can literally be a season changing impact, and I think despite all of the data on Payton with bad teams, Payton vs. Frazier surely is in the QPon vs. Salmons level difference.

When he's going north/south attacking the basket quickly he's ok, when he's going east/west trying to crab walk his way to the paint help defenders can get to it. It happened multiple times against the Warriors and we're lucky Portland's bigs weren't helping as hard or it would have happened a few more times last night.

I agree that Pels would have won Denver game with Elfrid and no AD. Don't think they win Portland game.

Payton loss is big because the only other person on this roster that can handle like him is Frazier. The other huge loss is on the glass. The Pels lost their best big man rebounder and their best perimeter player rebounder in one swoop and that has killed them. If you can't rebound, you can't run. Both guys were huge losses, as was Miller's spacing.

This team is very well constructed when healthy, but you pull any of their top 7 guys out and they are vulnerable. Pull 3 out and they aren't going to beat any good teams.

Take the two starters off of any team not named the warriors and you're going to struggle a lot this year in the West.

I'm been more proud of the fact that save for Utah we've been right there in every game we've lost. This team is right there will all of the good to great teams. Just need to get healthy.

The only thing that has bothered me over this stretch is Randle. Because I am thinking of the playoffs and who will actually be in the rotation at that point. And Randle is the only one who will actually be playing whose performance has bothered me. He has been so lazy on D. His screen setting is a joke. And he puts his head down and is in iso mode on offense.

That can't be the version we take into the playoffs. Like you saw in the Golden State game, he would be useless in the playoffs playing like that.

He has been the lone disappointment for me in this stretch when you look at the big picture.

Randle has had a moving screen called on him once a game it feels like.

Yep. I only care about guys who will be in the rotation come playoff time. Solo won't even be on the team. Don't care

The only teams who would take Solo would be for guys on worse contracts than him (with respect to length or not producing), which probably doesn't move you forwards. Maybe you get Batum or Porter but those contracts are gigantic. Otherwise it will take like two 1sts to move him with another year to run. In my opinion of course

Just like you wouldn't get a much better player for Asik and a first last year, right?

They already have Baze and Dedmon for Solo and Wes plus a first on the table. That's the worst offer that Dell has sitting there if he can't do better.

They will get someone. They want Barnes and that's what they are holding out hope for. Time will tell

If Barnes and Doncic compliment each other, I don't see them trading Barnes

what would a trade for Barnes look like?
Randle/Wesley/1st?
Would they really do Solo/Wesley/1st? i would think they would want two firsts for that, and i'm not doing that.

We can't lose Randle and not have some plan to get another quality big back. We can't play with just AD/Niko playing down low with no one behind them. We have the wrong Okafor.

Why would the Mavs want Randle? They won't want to win this year and he would be a FA and they would have no Bird Rights on him

B/c he's an expiring, and it's either him or Niko we'd send over to make a trade for a guy like Barnes or Porter who make that much if the other team doesn't want to take back salary for next year.

I know they don't want to win now, but that doens't mean they want to take on Solo's contract. Dallas is at least in a position where they think they are about to be better, and want to be a player in FA this summer.
Like you said though, if we can unload 2 years of Asik and a 1st for Niko, i wouldn't be surprised if we could do that here.

Would seem like with the shitshow going on in WAS and Beal/Wall taking potshots at him, Porter is going to be moved. I would prefer Porter to Barnes for multiple reasons, but Dell has Barnes atop his wishlist?

Randle also makes more sense for WAS because they want to win and don’t have room to re-sign him anyways.
