I think people are sick of giving away assets to try and make something work that hasn’t worked yet

Bro no one is taking CJ
It's wild to think no one would take CJ or we'd have to add picks. It's just a complete miss on evaluating his value and how easy it is to trade salaries, especially when the dude is still a good basketball player. Why do so many posters keep ignoring that?
You don't add 1sts or have a situation where "no one is taking" a guy when he's still a good basketball player.

Little to no cap flexibility with multiple extensions looming
quote:And if we didn't, he'd be a free agent now, we'd still be over the cap and wouldn't have an asset in CJ. And yes, he is an asset.
CJ has 2 years left on his deal and we extended him an extra 2 years for far above his market value

I'm not arguing that it must be done now. CJ must be gone after this coming year though or else you lose Herb and later trey
This is absurd. Next summer, the Pelicans will have 130 million in salaries for 7 players even with CJ making 33 million.
That's over 40 million below the likely tax threshold with Zion, Ingram, CJ, Nance, Dyson, Trey, and Jose under contract. With Matkovic and Liddell likely combining for less than 5 million, you're not losing Herb due to finances.
The idea that the luxury tax line is an absolute hard cap is ridiculous as well. If Trey Murphy is in line for a huge extension, the team is likely bringing in significantly more revenue due to playoff games, ticket sales, etc.

I think the best route is to give this core 1 more season to play it out. If we stink and/or both BI and Zion can't collectively play 100 games, then I'm ready to break it up.
This is so obvious that it's ridiculous that it needs to be said.

Yeah. It's the best and most realistic option

explain to me why you think this?

Herb needs a deal and Jonas expires so you’ll need to invest money in the center position. BI needs a raise soon as does trey.

Ok. You care to use some actual numbers to show me this?

In 24/25 we currently have 7 players under contract for around 130M. So around 40M for 8 additional players, including a starting Center.
I'm sure some people will be moved and those numbers will change. It's just going to be very difficult to have more than 2 max level players and not be a tax team. The league wants to force parity and spread out the talent. IMO there are less than 30 max level players in the league, I can't see where a team should have more than 2..

and for this year those 7 players are going to make around $125M, and we'll be under the tax threshold.
So the difference between filling out the roster this year and next year is $5M. The increase in the luxury tax threshold will likely be bigger than that.
so again, what the hell are you idiots worried about?

They want to add talent and extend existing players. It is not possible without surpassing certain levels and becoming a tax team. That is not an option, so players will have to be moved. Our big 3 is not sustainable..

It wouldn't be a Shamit article without wanting to trade B.I. Surprised it took him so long to get to that point.

One of the most important lines I took from the article:
That's us, sounds like these changes to the cap are good for us.

Of course they are in the aggregate, it's doubtful the Pelicans ever become a habitual tax team

If you want to add talent, you do it through the draft, which we can do, or, you can make trades. You don't add talent by signing FA's when you are in the position we are in.
If BI is not the answer to us winning a championship, then fine trade him, but you better be getting a player back that will help us win a championship, and that ain't going to be a kid who's never played a minute in the nba, so this thought of trading BI for the #2 or #3 pick is absurd.
BI and Zion can win a championship, i think. The key to winning it will be that 3rd/4th guy. Is CJ that guy? maybe, maybe not? We shouldn't need him for his vet experience. Grow the frick up and become a winner. BI has been in the league for far too long, and Zion is on his second contract. IF CJ can't be the guy we need on the court, then we need to replace him with someone that is. I love having a vet leader, but if his salary doesn't match his on court performance, then he's a problem. IF CJ were a better defender, then he'd be worth $33M/yr.

His 3 improved from his first G League season to his last. Still a work in progress but his shot looks fine.
