I'm on board with just holding on to Asik through the season. I'm not giving Dell picks to dump his mistake.

We need a contingency plan if this season's experiment crashes and burns and Boogie leaves. I think we need to hold onto draft picks, even at the expense of the positives that could come from dangling and moving said picks.

pretty interesting breakdown of free agency and some of it's pitfalls from Ben Falk's excellent Cleaning the Glass blog

Ben Falk on Twitter is a must follow, he's fantastic.

I don't feel like looking it up now, but has that cool graph I'm sure you've seen that show the value of each contract, and those larger but not quite max contracts are the worst values, generally speaking.

That's why I advocate holding onto our draft picks, hoping for the best with the AD/Boogie experiment and also hoping we can hit on a draft pick or 2.

I'm with you on this. We have to keep a pick and make it count at some point.

That's not what was shown in the graph in the linked article. The worst values were the $5-$10 million deals and the $10-$15 million deals, the 2 segments of the market Dell made sure to hit the first chance he had any significant amount of cap space.

thats what i was thinking as i read it.

ignoring the sinkhole it created at the 5, Vasquez/Lopez for Evans is still a stunner from the $$/value perspective outlined in the post

It really is one of the first awful moves in a complete snowball effect that got out of control.

Zach Lowe and friends were talking about what went wrong with the Knicks these past several years and they traced everything back to the crazy stupid trade of a 1st and 2nd for Bargniani. The shift/depletion of assets for such a failed move caused ripple effects that lead to even worse moves like signing Noah. That's part of why I think we can't give up a first to dump Asik. Stretch him if you need to but don't give up more than a 2nd to undo your mistake. Trying to undo mistakes just makes things worse. Take the lumps and move on.

I wonder if I'm being shortsighted about that though because this team will be in the tax if AD/DC work out. Cleveland is about to pay $14 million for Derrick Rose even though his salary would be $2.5 million. They are in the repeater tax, but if AD/DC works out the Pels will hopefully become a repeater tax team. What's more valuable to the team long term, using the 2018 pick to acquire players of using it to not be paying $15 million a year for Omer Asik 5 years from now?

depends what's more important to benson in the last leg of his life, money or improving the team

I think that's what it comes down to.
