The 4th pick scenario/The Beal dilemma

Let's say we get the 4th pick, and not the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd as we all hope and pray.
AD, MKG and Robinson are off the board.
Beal is the next best prospect on a lot of mocks. But do we we pick him? The conventional wisdom is that you pick BPA, you only factor in need if you have two guys rated virtually identical. You could pick Beal and then get a big like Perry Jones, one of the Zellers, or Sullinger with the Minny pick.
Beal is almost the exact same player as Gordon. Virtually identical. Obviously, you could bring him along slightly more slowly, could get some nice scoring off the bench, and could perhaps play them together sometimes with both having good ball handling skills.
But you would be taking almost the exact same player as your "franchise" player.
Do you instead take a chance on someone like Drummond? Barnes?

Does he have enough handles to play point guard? We would have to go with BPA at that point and it looks like it would be him.

He has very good handles for a SG, but I don't know if he is good enough to be a full time PG in the NBA.

I have unwisely gotten my hopes very high; if we don't get Davis or Robinson, I'm going to be pretty damn sad.

The people on the Beal Bandwagon make him sound pretty spectacular. If they are correct I'd be inclined to take him despite the duplication. You just don't waste the opportunity to get a player that is a full talent tier above your other options. If I don't think that highly of Beal or Drummond at 4 then I think you look to trade back.

If we get the 4th pick we should that Drummond

I swear I don't think I'd want him in the 2nd round. I'm definitely no baseketball expert or talent evaluator but he looks like a complete bust

I agree. He can have all the potential in the world but that doesn't mean shite. Look at John Wall. He has potential to become an elite point guard but he isn't driven enough to work on his game. It's a high risk pick with a very small chance of reward.

That's why we HAVE to get AD or TR
Seriously, you can tell both will work on their game and be coachable players. That's not always a recipe for success but it sure as hell increases the odds, IMO.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around this possibility since we've been in the 1-3 range all year long.....I definitely wouldn't mind getting Beal, but he falls into that 4-10 pick range, which quite honestly, I dont think any of us have contemplated about or neccessarily worried about.
I really wish Perry Jones wasnt such a poon, this would make this pick so much easier to make.

Beal is the second best player in the draft. I would have no issue in drafting him.

Que? We could be as low as 6 right now. The year we finished with the worst record, we picked 4th.
It happens, consistently.

I say we draft him for sure. Gordon has not extended yet. Even if he does, we can play them both at the same time in several scenarios with them playing 1/2 or even 2/3. And we could use him like the Thunder use James Harden or the Mavs use Terry.
I would still consider drafting Barnes in that scenario. I know his stock has fallen some in the past month or two, but I still like him and think he could contribute pretty quickly.

At 4, I have no problem with Drummond. He could bust, but he could at least defend and rebound his rookie year

I understand that, I'm not ignorant to that fact, but considering the multiple mocks we've all looked at, coupled with the conceivable notion of having the 3rd worst record.....anything less than pick 3 would be a let down.
Dont get me wrong, I still think that this draft is going to produce a really good crop of players for the NBA, contrary to the growing belief that there will be alot of busts.

what was the solution to the 3rd pick scenario?
Posted on 4/4/12 at 2:50 pm to Fun Bunch
I think we are in full-on rebuild mode for the next few years and need to look long term. I like the Chicago plan. Stockpile talent (meaning take the BPA) and then try to score that superstar at some point.
MKG, Beal, Davis or Robinson aren't going to win us a championship. We need talent. Take the BPA, whoever that may be. IMHO

we need a sixth man that can score, which beal would fit perfectly.

trade down first option...Drummond all day if i can't trade down...not completely sold on Beal in the first place, and we definitely don't need a starting 2...imho.
