So if the Hornets (Pelicans) finish 5th.... odds are they get the 6th pick

They may have a 36% shot at coming in 6th, but that's roughly the same odds as them coming in at either 3rd or 5th.


Picking somewhere in that range isn't a bad thing considering that there are probably 4-6 guys worth taking high in the draft, between Noel, McLemore, Smart, Burke, Porter, etc.

Not according to the chart above


26% shot at being #5, 10% shot at being #3.

Add the percentages and you get a 36% shot at being #3 OR #5.

You're looking at it wrong. Picking 6th is the most probable individual outcome, but it is not the most probable outcome.

Picking 6th = 36% chance
Picking 5th or better = 55% chance.

You can only go up to spots 1 through 3 if you win the lottery.

Even if the teams with the most balls, the Bobcats, Magic, and Cavs, win the first three picks in any order, we still can't jump the Suns for the 4th spot.
