Look I think everyone has warmed up to the new name of the Pelicans. From a branding point of view like jerseys, t-shirts, and hats, I think it's a no brainer. It's just that the name Pelicans doesn't strike fear in anyone. By "unofficially" shortening the name to the Pels similar to that of the Knicks, Cavs, Mavs, sixers, blazers, or the old Sonics just gets the name out there quickly. Sounds more Bad arse than the perception of a dumb arse bird like the rest of the country thinks. NOLA was the laughing stock of the league when they announced the name change. What do ya'll think?

Lord knows the "Saints" strikes fear into the opponent.

Same tired arguments that make no sense. Pelicans is the team name. Abbreviate it to Pels when and if you want but changing the team name to Pels is retarded. Are people lambasting Oregon because their team name is a "dumbass bird?" Sounds like not everyone has warmed up to the name Pelicans just yet...

Pelicans are rather fierce birds. Read up on them.

The bird is way more bad arse than the nickname "pels".

If we still had the murder bird we wouldn't have this discussion.

You realize that the chant "Let's go Pels" was first used at the official announcement by Joel, right?

Pels has been the official "unofficial" nickname since literally day one.

Out of all of these the Knicks are the only ones that you could say "unofficially" shortened their name

That you are overly worked up over a name.

I'm sure they'll probably have a Pels alternate at some point. But there is no reason to change the name.

Name intimidation is the worst argument ive ever heard over naming a team. I'm not just picking on you but in general this argument is brought up way too much. Most of the historic names in sports have no intimidation factor to them. The Boston Red Sox are hardly striking fear into anyone over a pair of clothing.

Maybe in another 5 years, I think the team was brilliant to emphasize New Orleans over Pelicans for pretty much everything. There's no better way to get this market to buy into a team before they start winning. Once Anthony Davis makes Pelicans gear a desirable thing, then maybe they can start emphasizing Pelicans or Pels, and nobody will laugh and point anymore.

No, and you should leave and never come back for even suggesting it.
