An often injured and out of shape star demands a trade and you think that's a bad look for the org. Yikes.

His clashing with the Nelson regime immediately upon his arrival certainly didn’t help that cause. Here’s hoping new blood with the training staff can get him on board

Part of the blame will be on the pelicans for managing his injuries and our training staff blamed. Hate to break to you but the pelicans don’t have a great reputation for how they handle their superstars. But please keep viewing things through biased pelican fans eyes.

So to be clear, I dont know if anyone knows but does this mean we got rid of Nelson or he just got a new support staff?

Is Nelson officially fired?

Mac said that Zion's value is 40 percent of what Utah got for Gobert.

If that's the case, keep him. He's way better, younger, etc.

Don't sell low. I keep flipping back and forth but anything less than No. 2 AND Williams AND pick swaps, I'm not doing.

Charlotte fans think we should be giving them pick swaps. So if that's what Jordan thinks too, pass.

His role is currently undefined as they rework how he will fit into the organization next season.

To me that is just a way to fire him, but not technically fire him, making it easier for him to find another job if the opportunity arises. He and Griffin are friends, they've known each other since the Phoenix days

Then if only way to get Scoot (if pelicans want him that much) is to trade BI (since your not getting great value for Zion)- Do you do it?

What a shite end of the stick. He became the fall guy because Zion couldn’t manage his conditioning. Im not saying Nelson isnt easy to deal with his long injury returns or burst crap but to basically lose your job because a 22 year man doesn’t have self control kind of sucks.

It also wasn't just Zion who complained about Nelson's "kid gloves" approach to handling injured players

quote:

“When I got the job, I called coach (Mike) Krzyzewski at Duke,” Van Gundy said in March. “I remember him saying to me about Zion, ‘Stan, the best way to get Zion in shape and get him ready is, he needs to play. He needs to scrimmage in practice. He needs to play in games. He needs to play.’ "

SVG also had notoriously long and strenuous practices, a season during which Zion played 61 games. Also, if you recall, the majority of games he missed that season were not due to conditioning, he broke his finger driving the lane.

None of this means having him play through more nicks and bruises will guarantee he plays a full season, but what we've been doing obviously isn't working

Krzyzewski never had to deal with a significant Zion injury where he's sidelined for a long period of time and belloon up to over 300lbs.

What the medical staff is dealing with when it comes to Williamson is not common.

I couldn’t agree more, which is partly why I think doing the same thing Nelson has always done didn’t work

College is very different in so many ways. Not as many games- less wear and tear. Competition not even close- you dont have to play as hard in college against some teams. I love Coach K but using Zion in college is very different than a fast paced 82 game plus playoff season.

The guy who took that advice got him to play more games than he’s ever played. To do the same thing you’ve always done and expect different results is the definition of insanity.

It’s not like the training staff frustrations stop with Zion. We needed to make a change

I agree with the change but still sucks, lets be honest if Zion wasnt Zion- Nelson woukd still have a job or still be in his position. Coach K saying to let him play through it- I dont know man do you remember seeing Zion playing through it in the bubble??! That shite was embarrassing. Also the season he played that many ganes was during Covid and the long break- so you have to put an asterik on that as well.

Supposedly Gentry had issues with his style as well. That does not mean someone else will be better, but there could be something to it. Ingram has taken exceedingly long to come back from injuries as well.

and he also played with that injury for I think a full month, and ultimately didn't stop playing because he couldn't due to injury. He stopped playing because the team chose to shut him down with around 6 games to go because we weren't going to make the playoffs.

So if we were in the hunt, then he plays 67 out of 72 games. But all in all, not terribly different from 61 or 67, we'd all gladly take either of those numbers right about now.

BI missed 37 games, Nance missed 17, Daniels missed 23, Jose missed 21. Couple that with consistent injury issues with multiple players every season of Nelson’s tenure. Doesn’t paint a picture of a guy who shouldn’t get fired

Honestly I’m not sure how far we could expect the showtime lakers to go if magic and Kareem combined to miss 90 games and half of the rest of the team missed 1/4 of the season
