I’m not sure why the confusion. He has made over 300M just on the court. His family likes LA. He wants to play in LA. You are overthinking this.

We don’t even have to get into the Utah part, the above is enough.

What better way to do that than be useful to the Clippers this year?

Westbrook hasn’t been useful to anyone in years

Yeah, I don't understand taking less money. If he gave up a million dollars or more, that just doesn't make any sense to me. It's less than 25 games, a couple of months. You can't play a couple months in Utah (half of which will be on the road anyway)?

Russel Westbrook is one of the most competitive players in the league. I've always respected him for that. I love his attitude on the court.

This dude has made hundreds of millions so it's obviously not a big deal for him to take less to try to win.

He has never taken less and I'm seeing reports that the Jazz paid the whole thing. So he didn't lose any money. If that's the case, then I get it.

If he lost 1M or more, then I think that is a big mistake. A million dollars is a lot of money to everybody. Gambling on a ring is a fools errand. I'm happy that wasn't the case here..

It's absolutely a lot of money.

It is also an amount of money that will not change his life in any meaningful way, and I'd bet not as much as a ring would.

Not even close. This is Russell Westbrook we are talking about, not some chump who's career earnings are $12M.

Westbrook has easily made over $600M in his life, and he'll continue making millions after he retires.
He signed the highest shoe contract with Jordan Brand in 2017.

Him losing $1M is hardly a blip to him. He's been making around $70-80M a year for the last 8 years, on top of the $100M he had made just in basketball contracts before that.

I seriously doubt Westbrook gives a shite about maximizing his salary earnings in the NBA at this point, especially over a meager $1M if that's reportedly even true. He's from LA and probably wants to stay there for good now and he's got more money than he'll ever need. Westbrook isn't just rich, he's frick you rich.

Yep.

We can't speak for Westbrook but it's not that hard to believe that the ability to stay home/not move his family for 3 months to Utah and be able to play for a better team than Utah is very likely easily worth $1mil less that he'd never even notice he had or didn't have compared to playing meaningless ball for 2 months in Utah.

Bobby Marks' twitter.

Stated the normal buyout is whatever remains minus what the players signs with a new team (prorated for the remainder of the season).

I got the impression he's not giving anything up or not too much, especially given he took time off..
