REALISTICALLY, what are the expectations for NAW and Hayes?

I know watching those guys in Summer League was really exciting, and they looked great. But Summer League is obviously a lot different than playing with the big boys.

Realistically, what should our expectations be for our non-Zion rookies? Should we expect for them to get an extended stay in the G-League?

ETA: sorry if this topic is discussed too much, really just trying to temper my own expectations

I think both guys can contribute positively to the main squad this season. If either of them spends any time in the G-League, it's only because the staff wants them to play starter minutes for some games to help them develop faster, but both of them are good enough to stay on the main squad and help the team win by playing meaningful minutes.

NAW and FJ will compete for minutes but my money is on FJ. Frank is still the better player. I think the only way NAW gets more minutes than FJ is if they need someone that can initiate offense. NAW can Frank can't.

I think there is a pretty big gap between Okafor and Hayes. So you'll see Hayes in the G-league more than NAW but I wouldn't be surprised to see NAW there.

Realistically you won't see either guy get over 10 mpg this year

I think NAW just showed too well not to get some run this season. He just looks like he belongs out there. It will be hard to keep him off the court with all the things he does so well. You can only keep a future star on the bench so long, if that’s what he proves to be, and although summer league is what it is, he made exactly the kind of showing you would expect from a future all-star. I doubt we ever see him in summer league again.

Hayes probably needs to develop more, especially in the lower body. I would expect him to just play a few minutes a game off the end of the bench this year. But by the end of the year, if he gets stronger and develops more, he might become a decent rotation player. My guess would be that happens next year, not this year, and that’s just fine to be honest.

NAW will be the 4th guard, behind Ball, Jrue, and Redick.

Hayes will be the 4th big, behind Zion, Favors, and Melli.

Hart is 8th man.

The 9th man in the rotation is up for grabs. I think NAW will battle Moore and Miller for minutes. It'll probably be situational, depending on the opponent.

I see Hayes as the 12th man. He should get some garbage time and play if someone gets in foul trouble.

I think that NAW believes that he can win ROY. At the end of the day, if he believes that, he can. Both rookies need to add more muscle to get acclimated to an 82 game grind. Hayes is freakishly athletic and he hasn't even scratched the surface of what he's capable of. He's still learning how to play basketball. In the end, it's all about Zion. The Pels aren't in a hurry to play their rookies big minutes unless they show that they deserve to play big minutes. Zion will however see the floor quite often and I think he will win ROY.

Since we have so little experience in rookies as fans, here's some numbers from last year.

18 rookies played at least 60 games last year. They all averaged over 19 mpg. 5 of them played on playoff teams.

36 rookies played in at least 40 games last year, and 30 of those averaged at least 14 mpg.

I expect both NAW and Hayes to play some G-League games, but i also expect them to be decent contributors by the end of the year and playing regular minutes.
I'd expect them to play in at least 30 games each, and my expectation for them is to struggle a bit but see some promise from both, and see big improvement the following season.

NAW I expect to be a decent second unit option that will have games where he is really hot or really cold.

Hayes is raw and for his first season going up against dudes that are so much bigger than him, if he can give Diallo production in this first year, I'd consider that a win.

say what?!?

They are going to scrimmage.

They are going to play preseason.

They will be sorted out by their play.

Hayes has a lot to learn.and needs weight room.

NAW has a shot. Between his versatility and random injuries, hes going to see the floor unless like frank rookie year the injury is his own.

For his sake i hope he cements his role before winter in erie pa.
Snowbelt.
I had an offer out of school to program for welch's grapejuice which is hq there. They made a point of warning about the snow. I picked chicago instead.

May he flourish.

it's weird b/c their strengths are the others issues, largely

NAW is going to run into problems without elite athleticism and probably will take a year or 2 to adjust. his skill level and Bball IQ are insane, so he's likely to stick around for a long time (even if he's not a great player)

Hayes has all the athleticism but needs to make a couple major leaps in terms of skills and IQ

i don't think we should expect much from either, at least until they get into the groove (for Hayes may take a few years)

I'd agree if we're talking about the Jaxson Hayes of today, but the thing that surprised me was how much improvement Hayes seemed to have made during his season at Texas and then again between the end of his college season and summer league. His willingness to shoot that 3 in the summer league spoke volumes about his confidence in his ability. How much better will he be by the time the NBA regular season starts? To me, that's the real question that will determine how much he contributes this year.

More than skills and IQ, I actually think that the most important thing for Hayes is to add muscle. If he can gain the strength to rebound well, then I think he can play now.

[Edited to add] By that, I mean that a little more strength and he'll be better than Okafor, in my opinion.

human development 101

Once you are 8 years old iq is same.

What you are looking for experience coupled with coaching.

And your post is why i take clarke over hayes.

Its no sure thing hayes can integrate the new learnings you observe he needs to.

1. Physique. Just nutrition and trainer

2. Iq. Maybe never. This is why i would not have boogie or jr smith on my team.
