That's what stands out to me looking at his highlights. It's not just him knocking down 3s, he's running through so many screens to bend the defense it reminds me of Reggie Miller.

Trey might benefit more from Hawkins than Zion and BI, because teams are going to be too busy chasing Hawkins and doubling the stars to realize that they left Trey wide arse open.

Hawkins is now one of my favorite Pels solely due to you melting about him.

You don't know shite.

I don't know shite.

fricking relax and see if he amounts to anything in a couple of years.

The Athletic analysis of the pick:

quote:

14. New Orleans Pelicans
Jordan Hawkins | 6-foot-4, guard | 21 years old | Connecticut
Vecenie’s ranking: 18.

Hawkins has a very real case as the best shooter in the 2023 NBA Draft. His jumper is entirely projectable to the next level, not only in terms of making spot-ups but also creating shots from 3 at volume with his off-ball movement. These players who can do this are worth their weight in gold. He’s going to make life for stars around him easier. On top of it, he works defensively, and he has some upside as a shot creator.

But to maximize that, and to really become an impact playoff player, he will have to get stronger, and that will come down to how much weight and strength his frame allows him to add. He has a wiry frame that could cause him some issues in terms of keeping weight and strength on long term. If he gets to a truly functional level of strength, there are some interesting ceiling outcomes that go beyond the typical off-ball floor spacer. If he doesn’t though, there could be playoff matchups where it’s tougher to get him on the court because stronger wings hunt him in mismatches. He’s worth taking in the first round if a team already has its superstar creator in place, because Hawkins can immediately step in and help create space for that player. If Zion Williamson is healthy, he could be that guy.

Hollinger’s analysis: We’ve got a run on shooters – three of the last four picks. You can’t argue about the fit, here. New Orleans desperately needed more shooting on the floor, especially when Zion Williamson and Jonas Valanciunas shared the floor, and didn’t get any from last year’s lottery pick Dyson Daniels. Of the three that were selected, Hawkins is the smallest and oldest, but also the most threatening on the move coming off screens.

Borrego will know how to use him too. Last year, Willie would have had him standing around.

I think Hawkins will be what we wanted Graham to be.

That's my thought. They want to go to a much more movement style of offense...and they draft one of the best movement players in the draft.

Whether Willie will actually use him or not I don't know, but there's logic involved.

Back to my original post thoughts.

It comes down to philosophy.

This is a relatively safe pick that fills a need.

But MM made a great counter point imo.

It was a relatively deep draft. There will likely be some studs beyond the top 5 picks.

I don't think Hawkins will ever be an All Star. Most of these guys won't but we went safe.

On one hand, I get the logic. You already have two All Star level players and two borderline. You need quality role players.

On the flip side, if you're not going to use the war chest to upgrade the roster, you need to keep swinging for the fences to find the next star.

I think if Griff can somehow turn Val, Naji, Kira into a decent big, I'll feel pretty good about the offseason.

If we just run it back with everyone minus Jax, Temple and adding Hawkins, I think that's a C.

I like dumping Spoon and Nelson so that bumps it up from a D.

Hawkins D actually looks really good in this link.

At a minimum he gives good effort.

Yes exactly. His on ball d will be around decent at the NBA level because he is an all out hustle player.

Where he will struggle is team defense. That can be taught if he has the bb iq for it.

Sure there will be, but what reason do we have to expect that the Pels can be the team to pick that guy. This regime has shown one avenue of success in drafting players, drafting high BBIQ players. Picking the project with potential is not the play I want this team making. Picking the kid with injury risks is not the play I want this team making.

Does it suck that the FO isn't better at certain things? Yes. But sometimes you have to just accept who you are and play to your strengths.

The important thing here is that he has the tools to be a plus defender and shows good effort on tape. He's going to be coached to defend better in the league.

Much easier to fix than a guy who has poor lateral movement or bad foot speed.

Yup athletically, personality wise, endurance wise, and bb iq wise he has the ability to get much better on defense.
