but I don't love the fact that Asik could easily leave us after one season and we'd be without a 1st round pick.

double edged sword. Maybe we'll end up with some cap room if we can rid of Gordon

Top 20 protection is nice, even if it ends up being a rental.

We don't have the cap space to absorb Asik, there has to be more to it.

If Carmelo and LeBron both shaft Houston, this trade will be even better.
Not really. Rockets needed to get rid of Asik anyway to clear space, and they get a first-round pick. Those things will help them with whoever then end up getting in the future.

Would Ely's non guaranteed deal be enough to make it work?

So who is getting shed for this trade to work? Gordon getting traded is too optimistic, so it's probably Rivers right?

No. I've been calculating $6.7 in cap space only keeping the Finishing 5, Rivers plus Ajinca and Withey at about $900k each. We might have to give 2 of those 3 up to make it work. I'm not sure if cap space counts in the 150% trade rule. I think that's just on outgoing salary.

Houston will acquire what will likely be a late lottery pick, perhaps as soon as 2015, from New Orleans, sources tell Yahoo Sports.

This implies that it is not lotto protected.

Even if it is a one year rental, I think he would be worth a pick in the mid 20s or lower. Our front court will be really good this year, and if for some reason we think that we have a chance at a stud and need the space, we could let him walk or S&T him for something cheaper.

This definitely proves Benson is willing to spend to win, since Asik will make $7m more than his cap hit in actual money.
