I seriously doubt Benson would be too cheap to pay any coach we really want. If they're saying we won't match his price then Dell or Nicky's people don't want him.

Like MM said, this is coming from his people. Probably didn't want him for some reason or another and to save face they put this out.

Too cheap to afford a coach? come on now.

Yeah, I can see this being a real problem because Benson doesn't like to pay top dollar for coaches.

/s/ Sean Payton
The NFL's highest paid coach.

Not really. He's very good, but not any price good. 1 CF, four years ago. In the weak East.

How much $$ does he want? How much FO say? What is Chicago asking for as part of a trade?

This franchise has a long reputation of being cheap and it needs to change with Benson. If Thibs is your top choice, you pay what it takes to get him.

We are going to Give AD a 140 Million dollar Contract. Don't think we are going to cheap out on anyone that's worth a damn

Yeah, thats nonsense. Question how Loomis spends Benson's money, sure. But he's definitely not cheap.

Highest paid coach, QB, TE, G, and S, of all time, just in the past 4 or 5 seasons. Highest payroll in the NFL over that same period.

Maxing out Gordon. 15 million for Asik even though his cap number is half that. 11 million for Tyreke. All contracts people call overpays.

11 million for Jrue. Already announcing they're ready to give Davis 140 million+

They also could've just let Monty's contract run out, then hire a new coach. Instead, they've committed to paying a new coach AND paying Monty to sit at home.

If Benson has proven anything, it's that he isn't cheap.

Relax. This hire won't crash and burn over money...unless Thibs is bat shite crazy with his asking price.

they're putting out millions on renovations to the arena and surrounding areas. it's already changing.

Benson has no history of being cheap. if he starts to be cheap, then i would worry it's due to his competency hearing, and that's a bigger issue.

so clearly, he may not be their top choice. i'm willing to bet the person hired for the job is not the person the board wants.

FWIW, I also don't think the report is accurate which is why I put concerning if true.
Although I think it is noteworthy given the franchise's long history of being stingy with money.

Nobody associated with the Pelicans has a "long history" with the franchise, so that's meaningless.

I think its pretty obvious he means Pelicans/Hornets...the Shinn years. But new Ownership so it doesn't really mean anything.

I mean if you're telling me he's asking for 11mil+ per year (considering Pop is 11 and Doc is ~10), then yeah that is a steep price for a non-championship winning coach.

What are you 16 years old? Benson was one of the worst owners in all of sports in the 90's.

He's not cheap now, but that's only b/c he's rich as hell now, and the nfl and nba are profitable now. People seem to forget how terrible he was before Sean Payton.

all this means is they are in negotiations. That's how negotiations work. One side wants a lot,, the other side doesn't want to pay that much, if they like each other, they eventually meet in the middle.
