So the New York Times no longer has a beat writer dedicated to the Pelicans? This is supposed to be some sort of sign of doom?

Pelicans TV ratings average middle of the league. General NBA ratings in this market for all games is very good, among the highest in the league.

Interest is there. What people aren't doing is going to Legacy Media to read about them.

Plus, as the Athletic continues its transition from National sports media website to NYT Sports Department, they will continue to slowly scale back until they are just covering New York sports.

I don’t think they don’t have any beat writers now.

Unless you like Fletcher and Duncan

Does Justin know the team doesn’t control who the beat writers are?

Like what do people want Gayle to do. Pull somebody off the street to write for the Pels. People say all stuff about the Pels (we suck, ownership sucks, there’s no interest) then when events happen that reflect that everyone acts shocked.

A guy who produces content for BootKrewe media complaining about this is wild. BootKrewe media exists because no one cares about conventional beat writing anymore. Will Guillory was a good writer but had zero multi-media crossover(whether that’s his choosing or his employer). Doesn’t break news(done nationally). Doesn’t hold ownership to the fire(the most interesting dynamic surrounding this franchise for years).

What draws people to what he does? It’s a boring job by nature that he also failed to make interesting.

Old enough to remember when people would grab a hard copy of the paper first thing in the morning to get unbiased views of either the Saints or Jazz (and also, some weeklies like Gridweek). Its all about access now, and advertisers to the local paper, so getting critical reviews from a local beat writer is becoming scarce.

Not Justin here. He pretty much blames the top .

The Pelicans media relations team, led by Matt Ryan, has always been excellent. They can only do so much, though

This is a national phenomenon. Print media dead. The Athletic won’t exist in a few years. ESPN is laying off a bunch of people Sports journalism is shrinking

Without a beat writer we’ll have to wait till the season starts to learn we still really suck at basketball.

Jeff Duncan is a plant. Blaming it on the coach being boring is on brand for him.

Losing team in a small market doesn’t exactly drive clicks and revenue
