If the only other team interested in him wants a pick back, we have a trade exception to use, no Center on the roster better than Hill, and no other PF on the roster besides Davis, why are we backing away?
Negotiating tactic

Maybe because we don't have a 2nd round pick to give the Lakers.

Having 2 interested buyers prompted the Lakers to ask for a pick. Us backing off prompted the Nets to say "No, we're doing you an expensive favor, you give us a pick", and now the Pelicans offer of free looks like the reasonable alternative.

When buying a car, the first "best offer" is rarely the best offer. Start walking out the door and suddenly they find a better offer.

I get that, but there shouldn't be THAT much negotiating in dumping a backup player.

I don't think it's a tactic as much as the way things have played out which could be to our advantage. I think Demps either couldn't get enough value for Pierre or decided he didn't want to pay an asset to rent Hill.

Fellas, I understand this. It was more of a rhetorical question. This is the part where Dell picks up the phone and says, "Hey Mitch, hope you're having a great Thursday. I see the only other team interested in helping you get under the luxury tax limit is asking for a pick along with him. Send him over to us for free, and have a great weekend."
Of course there could be other teams inquiring about Hill that haven't been reported (Hawks supposedly have minor interested, and Cavs were interested but just acquired Hawes), that makes this more complicated than just handing Hill over to us. But with 2 1/2 hours left to go, LA just needs to make a decision and go with it.

Or maybe they got an indication from Hill's people that it would be just a rental. I doubt Demps will deal for aguy who is not going to be around long term.
