New Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry to hire former OKC, Clippers assistant coach Robert Pack to his staff as assistant, sources. Great hire.

Figured it needed its own thread

From NOLA and worked with Flop City/OKC the past few years. He coached here in 2009 and developed Collison/MT5. Fiery intense coach that players absolutely love. Worked with Westbrook/CP3/Bledsoe/Reggie Jackson etc.

He'll really help our guards.

I agree. Fast transitioning offense and killer perimeter defense along with a coach (Pack) that shows a ton of emotion instead of the lost look Monty was so well known for.

I look forward to the day when I never have to hear this crap again.

I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I don't dislike it. He just doesn't have that much of a history to go by. I'm not even sure what capacity he has been hired in.

Played for the NO Hornets in 02-03. Was a spectacular dunker for a small guy.

I vaguely remember him being on the staff in 09.

Hopefully he can help the Guards.

I understand that, and they should be. He just brought a team with lots of injuries to the playoffs. The bar has been set.

That said, bitching about his facial expressions was always silly.

He has worked with some elite guards, but they were already established as elite guards when he started working with them, so I'm not sure how much value you can place on that. There's just not a lot to go by on him.

Those suits, though...

Just kidding, my complaints were never about his looks.

Love how some people think if you hire a coach known for once coaching good defense, then all of a sudden everyone on the team will be great at defense. Sorry but I don't think a coach will make tyreke evans and Eric Gordon play better defense, they just aren't defensive talented players.

IMO that was the best looking New Orleans uniform of the 21st century. I would rank them as
1. The original NOLA Hornets white
2. Pelicans red
3. Mardi gras
4. Pelicans blue
5. Pelicans white
6. Hornets green
7. All of the ones that had creaole blue incorporated into just looked like a smurf shite IMO

Back to the topic, if he can help out guards I like the Pack hire. I don't know enough about bball to crticize it so I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Man I'm getting old. I remember watching him jump out the arena with Denver and playing for us when we had Mashburn.

Great hire.

I think Tyreke will be 6th man or he'll be traded. As for defensive talent, you don't need all 5 players to be good, just 3. We saw it in year 1 with Monty/Malone, that top 10 defense was built around CP3/Ariza/Okafor. MT5/Belinelli were not good on defense and neither was David West. If they can add another defensive wing to the mix and Jrue is healthy I think they'll be set.

Collison/Bledsoe/Jackson weren't elite guards and those guys got better under him.

He works on improving their skillsets

ETA: He's a player development guy and a very good one

Basically He's vinson's replacement

Dude, brah. It's about hiding weaknesses as much as anything. Gordon is actually a better defender than the numbers suggest, especially when it comes to team defense. He often got caught up squeezing down to cover up for failed rotations at the top of the defense. He's never going to be a Bruce Bowen type, but he's not somebody who needs 4 plus defenders to mask severe deficiencies on his part.

As for Tyreke, I don't think he'll ever get it defensively. He just never really exerts himself there always seems drained at the end of games, even though he doesn't really spend a lot of time running off screens on the offensive end. He's just not a high energy, fast twitch guy. That's never going to change.
