Pelicans to pursue Paul George in 2014?

If he refuses to extend his rookie deal with the Pacers, he will become an unrestricted FA in the summer of 2014.
The Pelicans would be able to offer a poison pill contract which the Pacer could not match!!! If he becoems a restricted FA, our chances of getting him are very high. The advantages of him being restricted is that we would be the ones offering the contract which woul allow us to put in the poison pill.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say he doesn't extend his rookie deal. Dell really wanted him in the draft too, so it is almost certain he will go after him. I would say our chances of getting him are very high with the poison pill.

We won't have the cap room to do so.
eta - also, as far as I understand it, they can match the poison pill but they don't get to spread out the cap hit like the team offering it.

Explain, because I'm pretty sure they could match. But Pels have Aminu, so I'm not sure why they'd waste the money on George.

The pacers are a small market team. They would have a pay role of almost 80 million dollars. Factor the luxray tax in and no way they could match.

Not correct. Granger comes off the books. They'll be around $51 million in payroll and only need to pay George, replace Granger with a backup SF, and replace/resign Lance Stephenson. They're fine.
