Keep Smith and still have room to sign a number of cheap players.

So 42, we can give oden the MLE? How does that compete with what other teams could give him?

We can give him the MLE. Keep in mind, this is the Room MLE, $2.652m.

Working on other teams.

I'm also trying to see if the Pelicans can further rearrange things to offer more than the TP MLE, $3.183m.

If we can rearrange things, we may be able to create a bigger deal by placing this signing before Morrow (which I'm told is on the books) and perhaps sliding Stiemsma into the Room Exception, allowing between $3m and $3.5m to Oden, which would fit with the close to $3m reported, just close on the over side.

I shudder to think the Pelicans would offer more than 2 years to this guy, at least guaranteed.

Yeah, I agree. Give him 1 yr just to try him out. And by the way, this cap info is absolutely amazing. Before now I had no clue the cap could be worked like this

No need to be sorry. Before you were posting here people were going insane with the possibility of having to move rivers or smith for him

Oden was on his way to being a dominant player...

very low risk, huge reward--if he could even be a shell of his former self.

...would be worth losing a nobody or someone that MIGHT turn out to be an OK player.

if we don't have to move anyone, even better.

Eh, I thought that was necessary too.

Will be better next offseason, will find new ways to screw up.

Well done! I'm sorry I missed all this salary cap wizardy live.

Regarding what other teams can offer, the layman's version, which doesn't account for the kind of salary cap manipulation we just witnessed, is that all teams mentioned in the hunt are more or less at the cap meaning they have the same $2.65 million Room MLE to offer with the exception of Miami who can offer the $3.1 million Taxpayer MLE. Dallas technically has about $5 million in cap space left but they also are still trying to land other Free Agents so that money is spoken for unless they want to go with Oden as the starting center.

For those of you not wanting to read the 2 threads and 36 pages of posts, Mason and 42 have a new post up summarizing the Oden situation LINK

I would hope the tax implications would give Miami some pause before offering over the minimum. I think Dallas would want more for their cap room than Oden (i.e. Dalembert). Spurs may be the toughest. Even though they can only offer the minimum, he can play for a contender while learning from Duncan. Worth a shot though. Thanks for the cap clarifications.

Did Beli get the Spurs Room MLE, or did they have room for cap shennanigans too?

About Dallas: I am not positive on all their moves, but their cap holds put them under New Orleans PLUS what you said ATL.
