If Jeff Withey plays like he did last night, we won't have any issues.
Greg Oden is capable of scoring points.

If and when healthy

I thought there was a restriction on trading newly signed FAs before December or something?
Ah, that is right. The 60 days is when you get the guy in trade (Miller last season). It's 90 days or December 15 when you sign them.
So Smith or Rivers.

Withey actually has a decent mid range shot.

No one can possibly defend a move that sends Smith or Rivers to Portland for Oden.
No one.

Yep, that whole "low risk" part of the equation is blown to shite.

I absolutely agree with this. But if something else can work, then okay. I would assume DellMonty have at least some reason to think the guy can play again.

I think people are separating the risk once he's on the team from the cost of acquiring him.
I don't think anyone is ignoring the outgoing player, however.
Smith has a say in the matter, as well. Rivers would have none.

Or their interest could be overstated to drive up his market

But why send Loomis if that were the case?

No way on God's green earth we are sending Rivers for Oden. Absolutely no way!

Rivers is expendable. As soon as everyone realizes this the better.
Now whether you think he is worth expending for Greg Oden is another story.

I love Smith as much as the next guy, but he may be a bit over-valued around here.
He can't rebound and is average on D. He does have a nice shot but we need more D in the post.
Plus with Davis' minutes expected to be increased substantially this year, he will get even less time than before when he averaged 17 minutes a game.
Not to mention he is coming back from a season-ending injury and may not be 100% for training camp.

1. Are we sure Loomis is going?
2. Is he going specifically for Oden? There are lots of prospect in Vegas right now.
3. To play hardball

Mostly this. But I don't think Monty is willing to give up on his adopted son yet.

Smith and Rivers are obviously bench players that are expendable. Smith is a good backup that can score and provide energy. He is a great guy to have on the bench.
Rivers is a player that is still a few years away but has great potential.
If you are trading either of them, it is for value. Greg Oden is not even remotely value for either player. It is insane.

Then why Oden? I will say that a rehabbing Smiht is easier to part with, but I truly believe he'll be healthier than Oden this season.

And Smith may be, but the point is he is being over-valued right now. His best case scenario this year will be maybe getting 12-15 minutes per game where he will average 2-3 rebounds and play average D.
Granted, Oden may come and never play a minute, but if so, we really aren't losing that much either way.

Or does average have a new meaning?

Pretty sure The Pelicans and three top NBA franchises wouldn't be pursuing him if they weren't confident that he will be playing this season.
