Okafor could be amnestied?

The Hornets could decide to use their one-time amnesty clause to waive Okafor to clear more salary-cap space. Okafor, who missed 39 games this season because of knee injury, is owed $28 million over the next two seasons.
When Hornets Coach Monty Williams was asked to address Okafor’s future beyond this summer, he said that he didn’t want to get into it right now.
``He’s in a situation where we got to see where he is as far as his knee,’’ Williams said.``He’s going to play with our young guys this summer, which is pretty good for us. We’ll find out more about Emeka this summer so we can get him back healthy again.’’

Ugh.. I'm so torn on this issue. One on hand, he is just not worth anywhere close to what he is making. But it is so much money and they don't really need the cap space. If I was the GM or especially the owner, I'd be real sure before I made the move.
Is there a chance the injury is severe enough that it could end Okafor's career? Insurance would cover the balance of his contract or at least a portion (it'd be off the cap). I wish there was a way the team could prove that. He's obviously not the player he once was.

The thing with Oak is that, what are we going to spend the extra money on? We could free up all that cash and, do what, overpay another mediocre center to come here? I don't think there should be a rush to amnesty him, make sure that there's someone worth a shite that you can replace him with or upgrade another position. Even after we extend Gordon (assuming it's a max contract), we aren't going to be that close to the cap unless we decide to keep either Landry or Kaman.

Spend the money on Dragic, Gordon, and sign Kaman to a reasonable deal.
Get Trob in the draft and another big (Jones III). Maybe Rivers.

That's a lot of money due Oks way. We've been trying to dump him for a while. Probably we do it and get someone else here

I think you'd have to make sure you could get Dragic and make sure Gordon and Kaman would re-sign. Although I'd rather those three than another year of Oakafor.

I can't see Kaman being around next year...he will probably get more money than we should be willing to pay...imo, it will be Okafor or someone new, or both.

Monty said Emeka will play with the young guys over the summer...am i mistaken or does he mean the Summer League?
Posted on 5/5/12 at 7:57 pm to realtalk
i doubt okafor plays in the summer league...probably just means offseason activities

Oak sucks he's one of my least favorite Hornets ever. I really hope he's gone.

If we get the #1 pick and another top 5 you can say later to Oakfor

per Gil McGregor's chalk talk before the Walrus was fired, the original plan was to have Mek at the 4 and get a true big at the 5. He said that Mek was out of position at the 5.
Mek was much better definsively imo this year with Kaman at the 5 prior to Mek's injury.
