National Level Pels Coverage is Trash

I know the recent Bill Simmons stuff has made the rounds here but Windhorst, MacMahon, and Bontemps @ ESPN had a Zion "check-in" on their pod yesterday. Here are some of the bullet points from the "check-in".
- Good in the paint
- Brings up the ball sometimes
- Was a double digit negative +- in Mavs and Piston games
- One of them thinks Zion is 6'4"
- High level observation that Zion's defense was better at duke.
- His first block highlight was worth 100,000 because it was the last one he'll have.
Now I get that national media members usually don't have the time to focus in on every game every night, but to have a Zion "check-in" and not mention his new role in favor of "he played better defense in college" is such a trash take. As far as +- is concerned, I'd like for them to find the players with great +- stats in games where the opponent makes an average of 21 3's per game. Is Zion partly responsible for that number? Absolutely. Are these games indicative that he gives up all of his offensive efficiency back on defense? Not by the stats or eye test. You know who is giving everything back on D that he creates on offense? Ja Morant, who is one of the worst defenders in basketball right now by any metric, but doesn't have to take all this shite.
I get that I'm stupid for ranting about people who I probably shouldn't listen to anyway but that's my rant.

It amazes me that the expectations were "the best prospect since lebron", but people don't want to give him time to develop his game.
I honestly think people expected him to come in right away and be a 25/7/7 player or he was a bust.

Agreed htran
Guys like MM were shitting hard on Zion because he wasn't 28 year old LeBron or MJ from Day 1

He is doing absurd things and the national idiots all have the same takes again and again.
It is truly dumb. Personally...It may be a good thing. Let them write him off.

Midrange game is pretty much the last thing he needs to work on.

Zion's last 9 games (since the Phoenix game) when he started to handle the ball more: 28/5/5 on 69% fg% and 80% ft%. Oh yeah, his +/- is +69 over those 9 games.

And he’s been the most dominant scorer in the paint since Shaq. They should be super impressed by that.

BUT HE DOESN'T GET 11 REBOUNDS A GAME

Especially in the playoffs when the court shrinks/key is packed way more
He'll find it twice as hard to get to the rim then IMO

Is this really true anymore? Even the elite teams live and die by the three.

I just think he’s not a naturally great rebounder. And that’s ok as long as his handles, assist numbers, and half court defense continue to improve. But also means we need to make sure the roster has others that rebound really well like a Josh hart.

true
hes not 100% from ankle injury.
he cant shoot from three at all either.
his shot is some push thing.
he needs to rework 3 shot so its above eye level and higher arc.
people enjoy the flashy passes.
memphis is hoping winslow and Jaren jr get back to best form and morant ankle is healed with 15 games to go and they squeak into 7 10.
his 3 pt shot is awful though.
not a championship shot.
hes not an all star until/unless he completely reworks his shot.
fwiw the memphis media are totally aware his defense sucks and he cant shoot from outside.
if jaren and justise winslow were playing the spotlight on morant would be glaring.
the preseason predictions for memphis was sub .500.
so the expectations are not there like for zion.

They just want him to love to a big market. It is all about the money.

I find it depressing that the clock is ticking but none of the young players are at or even near their potential.

How would you judge this team if you weren't a fan? I know the bench is young, but the main guys aren't. Bledsoe and Adam's are long time starters on successful teams. Ingram is an all star. Ball is a big name playing in his 5th season and in the hunt for a huge pay raise. By all metrics, this should be a solid, competitive team. But we keep falling short. There is something wrong. So they are going to keep tearing it apart until they find something. Youth just isn't an excuse..

There’s no way imo that Zion isn’t a naturally great rebounder. The two most important things that make a great rebounder are desire and the ability to get your second jump off faster than everyone else. This is what made Rodman so good.
We absolutely know that Zion can get off his second jump so it’s either scheme or desire.

I think it is acheme
He averages 6.8 RPG. But he isn’t the guy collecting those easy defensive RB under the basket when the other team shoots a threes and doesn’t make an effort to go get it.

The team is 5-5 in February.
They struggled early in the season due to their horrible three point shooting and turn overs.
Taking the last game as an example. Stan could have easily done some things to lead the team to a win.

His jump is obviously elite. I’m not sure though about his desire to rebound.
Also we can’t overlook that he is really short for an inside NBA player and his arms seem below average in length. By comparison look at Darius days for LSU. He’s a really good rebounder in large part because his arms are so freaking long. He outreaches guys for the ball time and time again.
