If you are looking to hire Thibs, it makes sense to do this now. Thibs will not want it to look like he got his friend fired. So, you do this now and allow the search to start before the Bulls are eliminated and he starts looking at other opportunities.

Unless Thibs is not available. Word is Fred Hoiberg is just a few week removed from heart surgery and supposedly he's told the Bulls (who have him at the top of their list) that the stressed of the NBA are not something he going to be able to talk on at this time. That's all 2nd or 3rd hand information but his health is something to take into account.

I don't think that changes Thibs' availability. There is just too much smoke coming out of that crackpot of a front office.

this firing smells very personal.

I'd say the firing sounds rather impersonal. A decision was made after the season by Loomis, and we'll have to see who the next coach is, but the decision may have only been made after confirming an upgrade would be available. ie If Thibs is the next coach I think Monty might not have gotten fired if Thibs weren't available.

quote:

Why did it take 3 weeks to decide

Because the primary decision maker has been kind of busy with the Saints draft.

quote:

a question Dell thread

I really think you're questioning the wrong person. Do I think Dell wanted a new coach? Yes. Before injuries robbed us of the ability to stagger capable offense runners (Tyreke and Jrue), Stagger was the most over used word on this board because Monty refused to do it. Why on earth he would trot out entire 2nd units full of 3rd and 4th stringers never made sense and the mid season acquisitions limiting his ability/desire to do this are probably the only thing that kept Monty from being fired in March. And that decision to fire Monty would have been made by Loomis, not Demps.

quote:

Descriptors like "Dell finally get's his way" and "Finally Dell wrestles away full control of the team."

Just because Woj said it doesn't mean it isn't true. This either came from Monty or Dumars. If it came from Monty then it's probably true, there was a power struggle and Demps won. If it came from Dumars then they both lost and Demps is set up as the guy that got the successful coach fired and is the fall guy if the next moves fail, but if they work out then Dumars comes in as the valuable consultant that lead them in the right direction and can now take his rightful spot atop the Pelicans hierarchy.

I think something that gets overlooked by most regarding Loomis involvement in the Pelicans is that, dude to going on 10 years of relevancy and success with the Saints, his general expectations have been set. I dont see him saying "Well these are the Pels not the Saints, mediocre is ok". Not even subconsciously. Thats why we finally fired Monty IMO. His level of success would not have been acceptable in the NFL or with the Saints. And now we are effectively the same organization.

Last 2 seasons, and it could be argued the same over the life of the franchise.

That's absurd. 1 ring trump zero rings, even with a few decades of futility sprinkled in.

The last 2 seasons??

Including the one where the Saints won 12 games including a playoff game? In what world have the Pelicans last 2 seasons been better than the Saints haha?

Outside of that one ring, the Saints have been dreadful. That's beside the point, though. The Saints have been on a steady decline since that win.

My post was in response to Loomis not accepting mediocrity. The Saints have looked up at mediocrity recently, but nobody is getting fired.

2011 team was the best Saints team ever. Should have won it all that year. Just saying.

I didn't say the Saints were the greatest franchise in history, just that compared to the Pelicans they are more accomplished.

It clearly wasn't acceptable last year.

It's not like they sit on their arse after it happened. They brought in new blood and infused the roster with young talent.

They're also in good shape next year with 10-15 mil in cap space before even touching brees.

2006: 10-6, made the NFCCG
2010: 10-6
2011: 13-3, won a playoff game
2013: 11-5, won a playoff game

Never had fewer than 7 wins in that span. I don't feel like doing the research, but I'd bet that the Saints have a top 5ish record since 2006.

Of course they are if you go back 15 years, but I'm more talking about current state of the franchises.

Currently the Pels got swept. Thats like a 30-0 NFL play off loss.
Currently the Pels fired their coach.
And I don't put much stock in currently TBO.

Both teams seem above average for their leagues.
