And of all the teams with HC vacancies, the Pelicans have been by far the most tight lipped, with almost no rumors emerging after the initial "Lue and Kidd" report from Woj.

Griffin said that he would be slow, deliberate, and that interviews wouldn't even start for about 2 weeks. He also said that he wanted to actually meet with candidates in person, and that many remained in the bubble at the time.

Now only four teams remain in the bubble, with only a few possible candidates among them (Craig, Larranaga, Unseld). There are multiple ex-HCs that have interviewed with other teams, and a host of assistants available to talk to.

Do you think the Pelicans have already held in person interviews (besides the one with Lue in bubble)?

What do you think of the extreme level of secrecy the team is taking, something clearly unusual in the NBA?

Do you think they are going to wait for the season to be completely over so they can interview in person ALL possible candidates?

Do you think they are waiting on someone in particular, say, Lue, to see if they take another job?

They should just promote JJ to player/coach

I think it’s one of two things:

1. We already have our guy but like Crewz said they won’t announce it until a POC is hired first

or

2. Griff desperately wants Lue and is willing to wait until he finishes interviewing or gets hired elsewhere before moving on.

I am curious if they just really, really want Lue and have made him an offer and he's just seeing if another situation will pay more.

I also wonder if they are telling agents "if it leaks that we interviewed your client then they are out" to keep everything locked down.

Assuming Lue is choice #1, could Griff be waiting for a "No" before interviewing others? On the surface that seems crazy, teams often interview to collect information as much as assess candidates, but if he thought his main candidate could possibly go to the Finals, maybe he didn't want the other people he interviewed to be in limbo for weeks?

Griffin also talks about speaking things into existence, interviewing other candidates is the opposite of speaking Lue as your next coach into existence.

I don't think there's any chance that's true, at least I sincerely hope not. I'd be pissed at Griffin.

He spoke about being deliberate and thorough, and exhaustive. That wold go against that completely.

If the silence is associated with Lue, then they have interviewed other candidates but want him.

Personally, I tend to lean towards them just taking a page from the Saints org and being extra tight lipped, and I think they are interviewing a ton of people even if they want Lue.

They really have to be. Teams view this process as long term intelligence gathering. Even if you don't hire a person, they might tell you their ideas for Zion/Ingram that you end up incorporating. It's also a networking opportunity in a business where people change companies pretty regularly.

That would assume our choice is not a POC.

Yeah, that only comes into play if our guy is not a POC. Plenty of good choices in that category (Unseld, Vanterpool, Ham, Lue)...

That only comes into play if we have our guy and he is a white dude like Atkinson or Donovan, etc.

Crewz reporting sources:

quote:

Griff has interviewed several candidates. I know of one former HC that he has had a formal interview with for sure. Fans are impatient and assume no news means no action. But believe me, plenty of action behind the scenes

He was a coach this past season and he is white. Only clues I will give. Team wants to keep everything quiet

So he’s saying we interviewed at least one of MDA, Donovan, Atkinson. I’m going to assume KA.

And likely several other candidates.

Looks like the Pels just believe in keeping things very very tight.

Also such a vague, yet almost obvious rumor you could mistake it for speculation masquerading as “insider sourcing” to get some attention and compensate for a personality known to have a very frail ego and a bit of an inferiority complex....But I wouldn’t dare do that.

Would be a very safe hire. He would do fine. I am a little lukewarm on him right now but I'm sure if he gets hired I will convince myself to be excited.

He only says coach but doesn’t specify Between head coach or assistant.

He says “candidate”. He means HC.

I think he means that Crew only said that the person was a coach last season, not necessarily a head coach.

The question asked to him was if the candidate was a new former head coach and he replies with only “coach last season”.

Doesn't narrow it down too much.
