OK, so you want to:
a) Trade a fringe 6th man of the year player + the potential 2012/13 NBA assists leaders on contracts that have a combined 5 years/$30m remaining for a "valuable expiring"
b) have Gasol, on his last legs, mentor Davis for a season (this is the "big" payoff)
c) be limited with our options in 2013/14 because Gasol's contract ate up our flexibility
d) after probably missing the playoffs and letting Gasol walk, we have the privilege of taking our newfound capspace to do some combo of: overpaying FA's to come here (as we have to do in this market), trading for overpaid players on other teams that don't want to take salary back, and crossing our fingers that Demps can find some gems like, I don't know, Ryan Anderson and Greivis Vasquez
Wow, quite the nugget. Dude, Ryno and Gasol's contracts are fricking $10m apart this season. We are right up against the cap, meaning we would have to include $10m in contracts along with Anderson in the Gasol trade. Now play around with our player salaries, come up with a trade that works, and let me know if you think an already horseshite trade rumor looks more or less likely than it did before you read this post.

yep. same here....and i think Monty/Dell are gonna go after D, so I'm trying to get on board.

This is what moved Oladipo to number one for me. He seems be a great off ball defender, always ending up in passing lanes and making the right rotations. Our inability to make consistent rotations make me want to throw things.

They don't have someone who can create their own shot which Gordon can undoubtedly do.
I get what you're saying, but Steph Curry can create.
...He can come to the Pelicans any time for Gordon the "creator".
They average 101 PPG...Fleur is right, they just need to improve on D.
It's not like they're doing bad anyway. They're a young team, the #6 seed in the West, and they haven't had Andrew Bogut for most of the season.
EDIT: I typed this before Fleur said the same thing about Curry.

well done
...you brought it all together beautifully at the end.

Fair enough. You're right Curry can definitely create. Still think they would consider Vasquez/ EG for Thompson/Barnes. Especially if we also take on Jefferson
Posted on 3/20/13 at 12:41 am to MikeTheTiger2893
Oh, I think they would love that offer. I just don't like it so much for our end.
Posted on 3/20/13 at 12:44 am to Fleur de Diable
Really? Why not? Genuinely curious... Maybe I'm just too high on Barnes. I think he's a star in the making.
Posted on 3/20/13 at 12:49 am to MikeTheTiger2893
Dude my bad, I completely forgot about Barnes. I was really only looking at Thompson. I really like Barnes too. He can't find enough time in that rotation. If we could make it work without including Vasquez it would make me think about it a little harder. And that takes me back to my original belief, that they wouldn't want to do it, just for Gordon, in his current state. If Gordon comes out like his old self next year, all of that can change.

This trade would have to happen this summer. This summer, the Pelicans are more than 20 million under the cap. Anderson and Vasquez have a combined number around 10 million, so the Pelicans would have to swallow about 8-9 million in a trade. I think this is still legal, but if it's not then the trade could never happen anyway. I'm sure someone will correct me if it can't happen.

I believe our option this off season is to take on a trade, that's how we will use the cap space. Turning two back-ups (and if we draft Smart, that's what Vasquez is) for a borderline all star level Center for a year. Then yes, I will take that. If you want to beat down how great of back-ups Vasquez and Anderson can be, then be my guest. But in my "ideal" world, my franchise PF gets to play 36+ minutes without looking over his shoulder or having to play Center cause we have no one else who can.

Anderson can be a good starter.

good point...AD is the most important part of this puzzle. I just think it's a little too soon to say he isn't/can't be a center.

We're trying to get young talent here. I don't see how throwing away 2 young, cheap, talented players for an old expensive player helps us
I think the "mentor" aspect is overrated

I'm going to lose it if I see Danny f'n Granger's name mentioned in a trade scenario again. Damn people, he's going to be 30 in a month and is no healthier than EG. Yea, he's from New Orleans, no one cares. Like the dude saying to bring in DJ Augustin to start over GV because he can sell tickets.

There are reports of Derrick Rose and the Bulls having a rift. It's probably them pressuring him to play and him not feeling ready yet, but his brother did make those comments about not being happy no moves were made and Rose and Eric Gordon were AAU back court mates and supposedly Gordon's dream destination is to hook up with his BFF again.
Any takers for Deng and Chicago's 1st for Gordon? What about just Deng for Gordon?

I'd trade Vasquez and Anderson for P. Gasol. Gasol is also an expiring contract and solves the Center position.
i disagree. pau is very over payed, hes old, and he has been experiencing injuries lately. Not worth our cap space for a guy like that. I'd rather have lopez

Tempting but Deng will be 28 next month so over 30 by the time we're ready (hopefully) to make some real noise. I am still optimistic EG will return to what he was.

Incredibly overrated. In the original scenario, we were getting Kevin Martin to supposedly mentor Austin Rivers. The only thing those two have in common is an ugly release.

How young do you want to get? They can keep flipping everybody for drafts picks or you start a core (around a star.. Davis) and build on top of it. I watched Boston and Miami build championship teams in one off season. How? They flipped pieces and picks, were aggressive in FA, gambled and built around a star (Wade and Pierce). Or do you keep tanking for the lottery and hope you get lucky every year?

Obviously alot of people agree with you here, so you are not alone. I know, from interviews, that most star players were mentored by Vet players and that molded who they became (Magic-Kareem, Nash-Dirk, Barkley-Dr.J, Duncan-Robinson, I could go on and on). This team has no leader, no real captain and everything falls on Monty. That isn't fair. He needs guys that have had some sucess in the league to show these players how to be pros and carry themselves. I just think it would help them grow.

I like your posts because they are almost always offer a different take than most around here.
I agree with your idea that a trade is the best route- other than this years probably top 5 pick, I think they are most likely to find a core piece that way
But I don't think this proposal works because it just isn't sustainable.
That roster gets you 45-50 wins and the playoffs. What then?
1) You let the vets walk. Barring a miracle, you just took steps back in the win column by losing 3/5 of your starters. And now you've got tons of cap space for a small market team :( Demps is reduced to trying to pull trades again for high priced vets
2) You resign players, if they even want to stay in NO, on the wrong side of 30 to keep around the first winner in three years. Meanwhile these old guys are going to be declining horribly just as AD is entering his prime and needs his max extension. :(
3) Thank to a playoff spot, the draft pick is in the 20s. You have Davis/Smart/Rivers? to build around. Smart better be the second coming or that core is in trouble.
I think going after one pricey vet makes sense, but three, all with one year deals just doesn't fit Davis's timeline- which is the only one this teams needs to be worrying about.
