we were speaking the other day in one of our coach’s meetings and we were saying that it’s almost ludicrous to go out and try and play small ball with a team like Golden State. They’re the best small ball team in the world — well, maybe the best small ball team ever. So, you’ve got to try and counter what they do and obviously we’ve got two big guys that we can demand that they guard on the block. That’s how we’re going to try to attack the situation, and yeah, the trend right now in the NBA is to play small ball. What we’re going to try and do is exploit the advantages that we have and obviously we have two of the probably top three or four big men in the game right now.”

alvin's adaptability to this unique situation will speak volumes of his coaching ability. it will definitely be interesting to see how we attack teams this year.

So hopefully we slow it down this season.
Last season after we got Boogie, we placed at way too high of a pace and boogie was always gassed.

This is not gonna work unless we have shooters. Ian Clark is literally the only wing shooter we have and I'm not sure he can be THAT guy. I trust in Crawfords ability to score but not consistently- and I am very uncertain about Darius Miller and how he can just step in and be an immediate threat- just can't see it.

Why? After Finch implemented a Jokic centric offense in Denver they had the top offense in the league, even better than Golden State and the Rockets. They also had a top 10 pace.

You may not have gotten to see since it's the offseason, but Cousins has put in a lot of work, eaten a new diet and appears to be in fantastic shape. I never thought he was really fat before, but you can tell he's a lot trimmer. The after pic is from his Instagram in August.

He's definitely lost 15 pounds at least. Now that's he's lost that weight he needs to bulk up again just a little more while continuing to condition every day.

Clark has chance of lifetime.
He has to win most improved this season.
Odds against being in top 3 of voting.
20-1.

It helps if you have shooters, but it also helps if you have guys that no how to find creases in the defense and are good cutters, which Dante is very good at. Can't just sit in one spot and wait for AD/Cousins to do something, like we've always done in the past. The guys off the ball need to move more in the offense when the bigs have the ball.
Pretty sure Denvers offense around Jokic was more centered around cuts to the basket than the shooting.
Anytime AD or Cousins has the ball everyone will be looking at them. The second they make any move to the paint, the defense will collapse. That's when guys need to make their cuts to the basket, if they aren't great shooters, and attack it when they catch it while the defense isn't ready. If the main shot blocker, say Deandre Jordan doesn't have time to recover from the drive from AD/Cousins, then the lane is fairly open for the cutter. A standing still defender, not named Deandre or Gobert or guys like that, isn't going to block many shots from a guy cutting and attacking with a full head of steam.

MM posted some highlight clip of Ian Clark and David West playing off each other like that. West was basically playing Point Forward at the elbow and hitting Clark in motion on cuts for easy baskets. Boogie can easily do what David West was doing with Clark.
Hopefully Finch, Rondo and Clark can help get the rest of the team to stop ball watching on offense.

The problem with this is that small ball is better against bigs than bigs are against small ball.
The only way going big works against small ball is if the team is a lock-down defensive team that can slow the game down and muck it up. Like the Utah Jazz last season. I just don't think the Pelicans have that in them. And even then teams like the Jazz or the Grizzlies teams of the past have only gone so far playing like that.
What I think will happen more often than not is that the Pelicans won't play slow. They'll still try to play moderately fast, and Boogie will gas out. Even if they slowed the game down, I don't think their defense will be good enough to really muck up the game like the Jazz did or the past Grizzlies teams.
I just think if you're gonna play big, you have to be a lock-down defensive team in order to be successful, and I don't think the Pelicans will be that kind of gritty defensive team.

The offense needs to slow down and be efficient. Defensively it will require Davis to be on Durant while cousins is on green. I don't know how long ad can keep up with Durant if Lebron could barely do it.
The hope is to put pressure on their defense, but if green gets away with mugging constantly it's over for us.

The Warriors were able to hide Durant on defense to give him the huge advantage on Lebron. The Warriors were rotating Green, Iggy, Thompson, and Durant on Lebron. Not really a fair comparison.
The fact is the Warrios won't have players who can guard Davis and Cousins. I don't even think the Warriors have players that will slow them down. So both teams would have incredible mismatches on the offensive end. I am not saying the Pels could hang with Warriors in a series, but if Hill was still healthy I would feel good about the competing inna couple games.
Our projected starters of Rondo, Holiday, Hill, Davis, and Cousins could have been very good defensively. From the looks of it I expect Cousins to be in very good shape coming into camp.

+1. doubt the Pels can get to Utah level. have some talent, but will they be sound and consistent?
there's also the problem of 3>2

this idea needs to die. 15/16 Kings played at the fastest pace in the league. Cousins put up 27/11/3/1.5/1.5 and made 2nd Team All-NBA
