I know people have been up and down on Gentry over the years. This is a very talented young team that is going to win a lot of games just off of talent. If they are making the playoffs will that cause the pelicans to keep him around longer than maybe they should?

Gentry will be in the FO after this season

The guys love him, but he's getting old in coach years. An adviser/ambassador role while bringing in someone else (still have my money on Lue) sill be his future

I’ve defended Gentry a lot but, I’m ok with moving on if we can get the right guy. Doesn’t have to be a big name, just the right guy.

Gentry isnt going anywhere.

Hes credited with the gsw warriors style.

Zion is going to come back next year in better shape than ever in his life, a better form ft and a little jumper.

First team all nba 2021.
Asg captain 2022.

Nothing can stop him.

Nothing.

People accused me of overt-defending Gentry, but there hasn’t been much to criticize lately. If the Pels make the playoffs, they’ll definitely keep Gentry, and he’ll deserve it, based on performance.

do you think he has to get into playoffs to keep job?

A two week injury to any one top 7 player would make it very difficult even though zion is "all that".
Still so long to go.
Yes no ingram yesterday but some nights it would matter. I know hes back soon but i dont think it would be fair to gentry.

Seems obvious that pels would be 6th or better if zion had played all season.

People don’t want to hear it but Gentry is perfect for this team right now. He’s allowed the young guys to play freely and get comfortable in their growth. He’s grounded enough to withstand the tremendous ups and downs this season has had with injuries, the 13 game losing streak, and then now bouncing back. He’s a steadying force trying to get all these young guys to grow together with everything that comes with that.

I’m not saying he’s perfect, but, he might have been the perfect guy to deal with how this season started compared to dealing with the AD shite last year. Even during the losing streak he’s probably thinking I’d still take this over that bullshite.

Weren’t you just touting picking Ja over Zion a few weeks ago? Flipped on that 2 now?

And Gentry is fine right now to develop the young guys, but to get where we wanna go, he has to replaced.

Gentry's coaching seems to be pretty damn good for player development. If we have Gentry for 1 more year it won't be a terrible outcome. A healthy Pels should be talented enough to make the playoffs next year with or without Gentry.

What we don't want to see is a new long term extension. There needs to be a plan in place, behind the scenes at least, to either transition to Finch if this system is working for the core players, or to bring in a new coach.

This is the same sentiment so many people have, yet they can never give a reason why other than "Hes a bad coach", and they never have facts to back that statement up..

IMO we could do far worse than Lue

what exactly is his coaching philosophies tho? And I guess it’s hard to truly determine his coaching ability when Lebron isn’t on his team. People thought spoelstra was only good because of the big 3 on his team and now we know that’s not the case

He's a defensive minded coach and made his way up in the NBA as Doc Rivers' defensive coordinator.

Cavs fans said his OOT plays are usually great, and that he's an X's and O's type of coach, but like Gentry players love him.

He knows how to handle a superstar, and calls them out when he feels the need

quote:

Upon his appointment, Lue changed this dynamic that had been created by Blatt, ushering in a culture of accountability for the Cavaliers. Lue did not hesitate to criticize anyone from James right down to Jordan McRae, if they were out of line.
Lue’s treatment of James is somewhat similar to the legendary relationship between San Antonio’s head coach, Gregg Popovich, and his franchise player Tim Duncan.
Lue was able to set the tone for his coaching style very early, exemplified during one of his first in-game huddles, according to Ken Berger of CBS Sports.

Lue changed that the moment he first told James in a huddle, “Shut the [expletive] up. I got this,” according to a person who heard the exchange — and a few others like it.

quote:

While Lue’s leadership was certainly firm, he was fair and subsequently, he was able to quickly gain the respect and the cooperation of his players.
Lue is commonly known around the league as one of the most personable head coaches, having good relationships with players and coaches from almost every team.
His ability to relate to his players on a personal level, something Blatt tended to struggle with, is exemplified in his handling of Kevin Love.

After noticing Love’s increasingly passive play, Lue was able to change his star forward’s mindset by simply communicating with him.

Following a strong start to the season, Love once again faded into the periphery far too often as the season wore on, becoming an afterthought in Blatt’s offensive game plan.

However, prior to beginning his first playoff campaign as head coach, Lue pulled aside Love and had a message for his star big man, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

“And I said, ‘Kevin, you got to be more aggressive. Tell LeBron, I’m a bad m—–f—– too, so throw me the ball.’ Be aggressive. Run the floor. If you’re open, we got to throw you the ball. You got to demand the basketball and I said, ‘Score the ball and be aggressive.'”

Fansided Article

Doc had some real high praise for him as has pretty much every player he's coached

quote:

Throughout his playing career, Lue took notes and sketched plays and put them in a binder labeled by that coach’s name.

“I noticed him writing plays down, and players usually don’t do that,” said Rivers, the Los Angeles Clippers’ coach. “What Ty has done is taken a little of Phil, of Stan, of me, of Scott, and what he’s done very well is made it his own. That’s what you have to do.

quote:

He’s just very composed,” Cavs star LeBron James said. “He’s very sure of his knowledge of the game, and what needs to be done for our team to be successful. It’s great to have him standing up over there because he’s just very even-keeled. He knows what he wants from us, he demands it.”

It’s interesting to me that people think it’s a simple or obvious thing for Gentry to move into a FO position or, say, Redick to move into coachingwith this team. I’m not so sure it works quite that neatly, except in the minds of fans. There are other people to consider.
I don’t know, but I’m not so sure that the people involved even have that kind of move in mind.

For me the #1 thing is his age. He will be ready to retire by the time this team is ready to make a serious championship run. Griff will want to have his 10+ year coach already in place for a couple seasons before they're ready for that run.

2nd, it just seems like that's the plan for him.

Gayle has a sense of loyalty with the way he handled the whole AD debacle. Keeping him as HC for this season then promoting him makes way to much sense, as it gave Griff the time needed to establish the front office, training staff, and evaluate the entire roster to see the type of players needed and more importantly the type of coach he wants.

Gentry has 500+ wins already, he's getting up there in age, he can semi-retire and not have the pressure of being a HC without getting fired. He also gets to hang around a team he loves, and one that loves him. It's a win for him and the team

What has he done outside of win a championship with the best player on the planet and a healthy Kyrie/Love? As soon as LeBron left they were a dumpster fire again.

Anyone acting like Lue told James a single goddamn thing during his time there is hilarious.

He coached 6 games after Lebron left, while their best player didn'teven play...

As far as him telling Lebron anything, I just linked articles that state otherwise.

As far as what has he done, you just answered it. He won a championship against a Golden State team that went 73-9. He also coached the same Cavs to 2 more finals appearances before losing to those same Warriors that added Durant.

Gonna have to come with something better.
