Ferry is a smart basketball guy who was screwed in Atlanta by a bogus racial charge. He built Atlanta to a 60 win organization 5 years ago before being let go. He was cleared of the incident. He should be given a bigger role here. I would not oppose him being named new GM

it wasn't bogus. he said it and he publicly apologized for it.

now, was he caught up in a shitty ownership pissing contest in Atlanta at the time? yes.

did Deng publicly forgive him? yes

did Adam Silver publicly state that, in his personal opinion, those remarks and their context were not enough for Ferry to be fired? yes

do i think it would be a problem to hire Ferry full time? i don't believe so, but i dont know. if the Pels really like what Ferry has done for them, they should dig in and find out what the reaction might be from multiple stakeholders

Does he deserve power? Yes. Should we make him POBO? No. Should we require a new POBO to keep him? No.

I appreciate Ferry for what he has done and will do. But getting a new POBO to completely remake the organization is hugely important and I won’t let loyalty to a holdover kneecap the hiring of one.

Exactly, Ferry read that. He never said it which is why it was a bogus charge and the league cleared him of that.

I guess my question is that how much should we care that Ferry is the interim. It’s after the deadline and he may get replaced before he’s ever able to make any meaningful decisions. He’s just literally keeping the seat warm right now.

This is a time of year where GMs are typically very busy with scouting and such. If he's just keeping the seat warm he's doing a bad job.

i agree. they have to nail this.

only thing i'll say is that maybe it turns out that Ferry is the best option available. if they do a quality and lengthy search, maybe he comes up as the best candidate. i'm cool with that. if it's just- he's cheap and we know him (the reason we got here) then frick that. loyalty should have nothing to do with it.

to paraphrase Barkley "there's only one Pelicans. they can hire another Danny Ferry at any time"

Is he doing the scouting or are the scouts doing the scouting and reporting back to him? I’m pretty sure he would based his decisions on what the scouts tell him. Rarely do you see GMs at college basketball games.

Demps regularly went on scouting trips himself. A lot of GMs do. I'm sure the scouting department helps filter the list of players he wants to see in person, but there's a lot of stuff you see in person that you might miss looking at youtube highlights. I assume they talk to coaches while they're there too to gather more intel.

Is it just me or are there way too many people asking and answering their own questions in this thread? No it's not, and yes there is.

If his evaluation comes out on top after a thorough vetting and hiring process, so be it, but I don't understand this preoccupation with people jumping to crown people this early in the process?

Let Ferry run the show on an interim basis and let Gayle and her consultant team cast the widest net possible and do this thing right for once.

We got Demps and Monty on a hasty sped up process under Shinn, we retained them due to laziness and a path or least resistance strategy by Benson. Lets do it right just once and see what happens?

Pretty much my thoughts. Let him interview and try to be objective as possible with all candidates.

I don't think he should be excluded from consideration just because he was already here, nor should he be promoted for the same reason.

I'd be fine with a head POBO with ferry as the daily grind gm

Keep in mind a few things as people are pumping themselves up about Ferry as a replacement.

He came on board as a special adviser in 2016 on the back of his reputation as being a frugal free agent scout that could find diamonds in the ruff like he did with Demarre Carroll....The teams first order of business? Let Ennis walk and sign Solomon Hill as the Pels free agent prize. Now everyone deserves their mulligans, and Ferry's successes far outweigh his failures, but Ferry isn't without some question marks himself. So lets keep that in mind as well.

Agreed I'm just saying if it came to that scenario I'm ok with it even though it's not my first choice

We could certainly do worse

I thought he was considered one of the best before the ATL thing. He was working with us and involved in the Solomon Hill deal? Wasn’t aware of that and had thought he was considered a really great evaluator before his hawks thing.

Non-issue. If Ferry isn't retained it'll be because whoever replaces him is objectively better (or, at least, objectively better in Gayle's mind). As someone else mentioned I would be fine with Ferry remaining as part of the staff (GM even if the new hire is installed as POBO) but not as the primary head of basketball operations.
