Mates, Ryen Russillo of the great Bill Simmons' "The Ringer" network, had vastly overpaid veteran CJ McCollum on his latest programme.

He talks with Ryen about the Nuggets' dominance this postseason, his view of our poverty-stricken Pellies and Zion Williamson, and finally his former team in Rip City.

It's a very good interview and everyone ought to listen to it.

He gave a pretty good summary tbh. Probably nothing CJ hasn’t said already on espn, on his podcast, in a post game interview, or in an andscape diary.

This site was definitely better when you were gone for like six months.

He's obviously measured with his words, but you can tell imo when he talks Zion that he is just done with Zion and his work ethic or lack thereof.

This interview was no different.

Damn. Might have to peep if it came off that strong.

I think the only hint of potential angst from CJ (towards Z), I caught this season was his postgame after the Thunder Play In game.

Nothing like that

Just things like saying he hasn't said anything in public that he hasn't said directly to Zion in private. Stuff like that.

He's obviously not going to take care of hard stance but he also seems to go out of his way not to do the "poor Zion" thing where everyone is out to get him.

Here's an example of a CJ quote from the podcast:

quote:

“I’ve had serious conversations with him (Zion) on multiple occasions. Not just me, also Larry and I said this to him… you can be as good as you want to be and that’s not for everybody.”

That's basically a nice way of saying you aren't doing what you need to do and asking, do you even want to be good?

It's a very direct call out.

CJ is being very polite in doing so.

Jimmy Butler’s way of handling this shite in Minny was to run the scrub team against KAT and Wiggins and take their fricking souls out.

Hope this off-season doesn't just become a referendum on Zion. For sure his availability had a huge impact on the season but there is plenty of culpability to go around. This season was on the front office, coaches, and players and there is plenty of room for improvement. Pels were 2 games out of a playoff berth and 3 or 4 games out of a high seed in a wide-open West.

Pels are a pretty clandestine organization, I'd rather not hear team spokesmen talking in generalities blaming the disappointing season on just availability concerns. If the front office made better deadline moves, they're in. If Coaches were better with rotations and adjustments, they're in. If players were better with shot selection, ball control and rebounding, they're in.

Comparing CJ McCollum to Jimmy Butler might be the most ridiculous thing ever posted on this site.

KAT is the much better comparison to CJ, full speed on offense but plays like he's stuck in mud on defense or when a ball is lose. CJ might be the only player in the league who gives less effort closing out on a shooter than KAT.

The difference is CJ has physical limitations which is understandable. KAT has every tool imagineable and yet he doesn't have the mentality to work hard or consistently play hard.

KAT is as close to a generational prospect as there ever was one before Wemby. CJ isn't in the same class and yet he's outperformed his stock at every level. It's kind of hilarious you're even comparing KAT to CJ.

I think not doing so was the correct call.

I hear what you're saying overall but in the end, availability was by far the biggest factor in our season, with Zion being the biggest culprit. Given it's becoming very obvious that it more than just bad luck and Zion actually not being a professional and doing the bare minimum to handle his injuries, I'm fairly certain it will be the biggest offseason story for the Pels, and imo, it should be.

Our 2 best best players give less effort than CJ in defense.

Fair enough, and maybe that’s the play for public consumption. Make no mistake though, the whole organization needs to improve. Griff said in his end of season presser he was almost happy the team didn’t get in the playoffs (I disagree) but i understand what he’s saying. The West is going to be super competitive and better next year and even with a healthy Zion and BI Pels are not going to contend for a title unless there’s improvement top to bottom from the FO, coaches, and players.

Here's an article on the podcast and a link to the article LINK
The season started off so bright for Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans. At one point early in the campaign, they sat atop the conference where the Denver Nuggets now stand – the best team in the West.

But after another injury-plagued season, the Pelicans were trounced out early in the Play-In with Williamson unable to suit up at all. Few understand his full potential like CJ McCollum, one of his vets in New Orleans and current president of the NBPA. That’s why McCollum has had “serious conversations” with Zion about being the only man stopping him from his own greatness, as he shared on a recent appearance on the Ryen Russillo podcast:
I’ve had serious conversations with him on multiple occasions,” said CJ McCollum. “Not just me, Larry [Nance Jr.]. I’ve told him, ‘You can be as good as you wanna be, and that’s not for everybody. … The level of the best version of [Zion Williamson] is a level that everybody can’t get to.”
In his first four seasons with the Pelicans, Zion Williamson has played in just 114 games. That’s not even a season and a half worth of on-court action. What’s made his career so frustrating thus far is that in those games he was one of the most dominant players in the league right off the bat.
“Your ceiling is unlike anything the NBA has ever seen,” McCollum claims he told Williamson. “But it’s up to you to take full advantage of whatever that is. I can’t want it for you. Mom can’t want it to you. Dad can’t want it to you. Staff can’t want it to you. So it’s up to you to decide what that looks like. … You’ve got to figure out what you want to do with this game, because this game will go where you take it.”

Pelicans fans want nothing else than for Zion Williamson to heed that advice.
