Actually, I assume we can pick up his option at any point before that date. If we did, we could trade him at that point. However, I'm not sure when trading opens back up. Is it the same as free agency?

Yeah, I really haven't looked at the slot amounts this year. I set it at 3.5M (assuming we continue to struggle). Hell, let's say I'm hedging a bit against David Stern shocking the world...

Demps should be able to get it off the books by saying he won't pick up the option.

I think you would have to formally decline the option.

Yeah, that's what I was implying.

Okay. So, I think I get what you are saying:

First, make a verbal agreement with a big fish. However, you don't have the space yet for big fish, so you decline the option. You then turn around and ink the big fish who you just made space for.

Makes sense, as long as you aren't making a verbal agreement with Carlos Boozer.

Right, and it probably doesn't even need to be a verbal agreement. As long as Demps files the formal declining of Lopez' option before filing the contract of the big fish, things should be fine.

Yes. The same. Agreements are made in principle, but they can't be made official until the moratorium ends. This is because the NBA is doing all of its accounting, etc. It's necessary to get the i's dotted and t's crossed.

Based on last year's cap figures, you don't get into $3.5m range unless you have pick 3. Picks 6-9 have a $2m - $2.5 scale value. Those will pick up a little this year, but not 10%.

think the chances of not picking up Lopez' option are pretty slim at this point. He has proven himself worth $5M

Im missing the part of his production thats totally deserves 5mil on this team in this small market. We can easily find an energy guy that rebounds and plays d.

Find a better center making less (rookie deals don't count).

Not really true. If it were so easy, it would have been done already.

is so true! if we weren't lowballing the roster, it would have been done already. we bring in just enough production to keep the tank talking heads away. thats my theory and im stickin to it. i do like lopez but aminu is more productive.

It has nothing to do with low-balling. Benson is spending more than the cap this season. We are just in a major transient year where a third of the payroll is tied up in jettisoned players. It is what it is and will be getting better next season.
