No, I'm not sure how you interpreted it that way. My point is simply that it probably wouldn't cost a lot to meet the aforementioned "only an idiot would turn it down" threshold for him to buy the paper. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm supporting your point.

You do need a watchdog, though. In all seriousness, what if somebody REALLY had proof that Mickey Loomis was wiretapping? Would the TP investigate? Or would they reveal the identity of the whistleblower and make his life a living Hell?

Actually, given the Newhouse family's history and stated intentions (not just involving the TP), it would take a bigger idiot to offer the kind of money it would take for them to accept. I'm saying potential purchasers could offer that Philadelphia money and Steven Newhouse could very well refuse. The family has more money than they can spend, and this thing has become a fricking crusade with them. It has little to do with losing money on or the true value of the TP.

you sound like you know whats going on... can you give a run down of this whole situation with TP?

Just from what I've read about the Newhouse group (Advance Publications)and by talking to a couple of people who work for their publications in Alabama and, of course, the TP.
This switch to online is happening with several of their papers around the country. It's not just the TP that is being targeted.
No doubt, they want to cut costs in production, distribution, editorial staff and reporting. But it's more than that. They feel they are among the leaders taking traditional print media (specifically dailies) online. That's why I say, it's like a crusade with them. They don't give a shite about local concerns. They figure we'll buy in eventually because we'll have no alternative.
