Great win tonight, but yet another game played in the 120s+. It's fun to watch them score so much, especially with better ball movement. But they are still giving up a ton of points (only held two teams all year under 100). I looked it up and they are 6th in the league in pace (LINK ). Offensive and defensive ratings are pretty much the same, which you'd expect since they are around .500. Could they be playing too fast? Given our size advantages, you'd think we could grind teams down. But doesn't seem to be the style or design. Will this change or should it?

Most teams are giving up 100+ but we do need to get our number down a little. I think we are giving up 110. About the pace...I think that is gentry's style so that probably won't change

Not many big men can run the floor like Boogie (before he gets tired). I would like to see us work the post more, and we did some last night, and it worked drawing in 3 or 4 guys.

If we can run and limit the turnovers (14 last night, 6 from Jrue alone) I'm okay with it.

AD/DC are just drawing too much attention without even without the ball in their hands to do much in the post. Those often end up being bad possessions with forced shots as the shot clock winds down because they are usually pretty well defended. They have been able to get Jrue some good post ups though.

1st half they play at 105 possessions/48, they are a +5.

2nd half they play at 99 possessions/48, they are a -4.5

do they just simply play better going faster? do they run out of gas in the 2nd half from playing too fast? i dont know.

i do think other posters here are right that grinding it out with Cousins/Davis is not the best way to use their talents or to maximize the rest of the roster.

Love it when Jrue gets aggressive and they use him as a scorer. Like Rondo said the other night, he's a great iso scorer

Lowe did a neat breakdown of this the other day. video in the link

LINK

trigger warning for the fire Gentry crowd:

quote:

10. Sudden Pelicans post-ups

I love watching the Pelicans -- how Alvin Gentry runs the offense through his two star bigs from all over the floor. One of my favorite set pieces: When the Pels laze into what looks like a rote "horns" set, with a big at each elbow and shooters in the corners, only to snap into a post-up that catches the defense by surprise.

quote:

Sometimes, it's DeMarcus Cousins or Anthony Davis bulldozing from the elbow.

And sometimes, it's Jrue Holiday, slicing down the gut.

The player in Holiday's spot there would normally proceed to one of the corners, and screen for a teammate. Defenders expect that. They are usually unprepared for Holiday to crash into them with such force.

Holiday has taken flak for shooting just 27.5 percent from deep, and that's fair. New Orleans is desperate for spacing. But he's also shooting 57 percent from 2-point range, including 7-of-9 on post-ups, per Synergy Sports. New Orleans has inverted the floor: bigs are creating for guards. A hair more than half of Holiday's buckets have come via assists, up from 29 percent last season and 27 percent in 2015-16, per NBA.com.

i have a holiday observation along those lines that really stood out last night...he's not a good enough finisher to not "set up" his drives with some made jump shots

we've all said since the trade...he's a an efficient finisher but not an effective finisher, ie he doesnt drive enough (and get fouled). but look at how many layups he either missed or got blocked last nite. he not creative around the rim and he shows the ball way too much

Boogie definitely looks gassed in second halves. I notice his effort is down and his lazy offense (pullup 3's) comes out more in the 2nd half.

He has never been a great finisher in traffic even when dominant getting to the rim. He misses way too many shots close-in. With Rondo he seems to be getting more free baskets this year bringing up his % around the rim, but he still is not good when contested. He also is too mild mannered to sell and get fouls called like other guards in the league.
