Why would we not use Hart's Bird rights to sign him?

You have to renounce all of those exceptions before you can use cap space. So just holding onto those exceptions keeps you "over the cap". If they can use Bird Rights to sign Josh Hart to his QO and don't need free cap space to do it, then signing Hart cheap shouldn't make them "under the cap".

We would, I was responding in part to Teddy saying if we signed Hart to the QO that would put us under the cap. I'm saying it wouldn't because by holding onto exceptions you remain over the cap even if technically your payroll is under the cap.
Posted on 8/16/21 at 12:17 pm to TigerinATL
Isn't it Hart's decision to sign the QO, or an actual new contract?
Posted on 8/16/21 at 12:20 pm to Pelefraan 1
Yes, but we're talking about funding mechanisms for that contract, regardless of what he decides.

I'm almost certain if the full MLE will put you over the cap, you can use it.
After reading a bit, i think you're right. You can use the full MLE as long as you have cap space that's less than the exception.
So if you have less than $9M left in cap space, you can use the full MLE to go over the cap, and if you have less than $5M in cap space, you can use the room exception to go over the cap.

Cam Reddish is now represented by Klutch. I know some were interested in Reddish as a trade target, I would assume this kills the dream for a good many of you.

You just have to be the full MLE under the luxury tax line to use the full MLE. Not the actual salary cap line
Actually, you're right as well. I think.
My point is, you don't need cap space less than the MLE to use it as the only criteria. You can be an over the cap team and still use the full MLE. You just can't head into tax territory using the full NT MLE

He's pulling a Lonzo.

correct, i was just clarifying how you can use it when under the cap.

Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier has agreed to a four-year, $97 million max contract extension, his agent Aaron Turner of @VerusTeam told @TheAthletic @Stadium. The guaranteed deal takes Rozier through the 2025-26 season.
Makes Graham even more of a bargain

and that just further proves, on top of drafting Bouknight, why they were never going to match any offer for Graham.

Jeez. I know Rozier was good last season but paying him 24 million/year just doesnt move the needle for me

Here are some 538 Raptor ratings of selected Hornets and Pels guards last season. The numbers in order are Total offense, total defense, Combined offense and defense, and WAR.
Graham +1.8/+0.6/+2.4/4.3
Rozier +2.7/-1.2/+1.6/5.2
Lamelo +1.2/-0.9/+0.3/2.3
Lonzo +1.4/+0.4/+1.8/4.1
Bledsoe -0.4/-1.8/-2.2/0.6
NAW -1.3/+0.7/-0.6/1.1
Graham seems like a salary bargain for his potential value. Rozier would appear to provide a lot of offense, but is a big negative on defense at a high salary. Bledsoe really sucked last year as we all know. NAW really needs to pick it up this year.

New ESPN story: Who is the NBA’s best player? What were the best and worst moves of the offseason? Who is going to win the title next season? We posed those questions, and more, to scouts and executives around the league as the offseason winds down: LINK
How sad. Hope Griffin is able to say "I told you so" at some point.

Yeah I think those executives forgot we got Zion and BI, upgraded starters at both PG and C, fired our woke Walrus coach, got the steal of the draft w Murphy, and all our young guys are improving

It's not as bad as it looks on the surface. He asked a panel of 10 and 3 of the 10 voted that the entirety of the Pels offseason was the worst move of the offseason.
That's just 30% that feel the Pels had the worst offseason. It's not great, it's just vastly overstated if you don't look at the numbers, like a New York Times Best Seller award.
I also think most of the people judging the Pels didn't watch them play enough to see that even if the Pels NBA 2k team talent level didn't change, the fit has done a 180. The Pels will play much better than people are expecting and Willie Green is going to get more credit than he deserves. He will deserve some of it, but people will give it all to him because they don't think the talent improved.
"They dumped Lonzo, and Bledsoe is playing good for the Clippers, and Valanciunas is a traditional big like Adams. It doesn't make sense unless Willie's a great coach."
But the biggest reason for the improved play will be that Griff/Langdon built a much better roster this year, and shifted the focus/goal of the team back to it's offensive strengths and away from the defense only focus they had with SVG.

Or it further proves that we got a hell of a deal on Graham and we were willing to give up a little bit higher in compensation to make sure the deal didn’t fall through.
