The Raconteurs -- Carolina Drama
There's not another song that i've ever heard that gets me like this one does. I get goosebumps literally every damn time i hear this song when he gets to the part that goes "And Billy shouted, 'Daddy, why'd you have to come back here?'"
Bob Dylan -- Hurricane
Such a great song. I can't even imagine how amazing it must have been to be around for this song when it actually came out.
What do y'all got?

The early to mid 70's were indeed an awesome time for me.

Robert Earl Keen - The Road Goes on Forever

The Ballad of John and Yoko - The Beatles
Not a great "story" but more like a great song that tells a simple story.

"A Day in the Life"
No song tells a better story than that. Lennon and McCartney
I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the GRADE
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.
I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
but I just had to look
Having read the book
I'd love to turn you on
Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
and Somebody spoke and I went into a dream
I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on

A lot of Bob Dylan songs:
Tangled Up In Blue
Simple Twist of Fate
Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts
Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll
Visions Johanna (stream of consciousness)
Black Diamond Bay
Plenty more.

Blood on the Tracks is just greatness on all levels. Amazing album, although a bit depressing.

I wish Bob Dylan would go through another separation/divorce while making an album.

One of my favorite song stories: Dear Doctor by the Stones
Pancho and LeftyI like the Willie Nelson/Merle version better than the original.
Telegraph Road by one of my top 3 bands, Dire Straits
Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash
Delta Dawn by Helen Reddy
Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band
Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price (although I only know it because of the Dead
Pretty much all Marty Robbins songs tell excellent stories. I like All Around Cowboy
I'm throwing this one out there, because in like 3rd grade I was obsessed with it...not so much a "good" story as it is a ridiculous one, but I always got some laughs out of it: Albuquerque by Weird Al
So dumb^
eta some of you posted lyrics. The lyrics to "Dear Doctor" are excellent:
Oh help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
There's a pain where there once was a heart
It's sleepin, it's a beatin'
Can't ya please tear it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
Oh help me, please mama, I'm sick'ning
It's today that's the day of the plunge
Oh the gal I'm to marry
Is a bow-legged sow
I've been soakin' up drink like a sponge
"Don't ya worry, get dressed," cried my mother
As she plied me with bourbon so sour
Pull your socks up, put your suit on
Comb your long hair down,
For you will be wed in the hour
So help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
There's a pain where there once was a heart
I'm sleepin, it's a beatin'
Can't ya please take it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
Oh help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
There's a pain where there once was a heart
It's sleepin, it's a beatin'
Can't ya please tear it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
I was tremblin', as I put on my jacket
It had creases as sharp as a knife
I put the ring in my pocket
But there was a note
And my heart it jumped into my mouth
It read, "Darlin', I'm sorry to hurt you.
But I have no courage to speak to your face.
But I'm down in Virginia with your cousin Lou
There be no wedding today."
So help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
You can put back my heart in its hole
Oh mama, I'm cryin'
Tears of relief
And my pulse is now under control

Warren Zevon "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner"
Harry Chapin "Taxi"
And we were lucky enough for Harry to have lived long enough to have written and performed the underrated:
Harry Chapin "Taxi Sequel"
Pretty most any Harry Chapin song tells a good story such as "I Wanna Learn a Love Song" "Cats in the Cradle" and "W O L D".
Gordon Lightfoot "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
You should watch this video with Harry Reasoner reporting and film of the wreckage.

Harry Chapin was one of the great storytellers and a very decent human being.
