The recently departed David Allan Coe recorded the song "You never even called me by my name", and it has become a popular sing-along staple for certain crowds. Before the last verse, he speaks "..a friend of mine named Steve goodman wrote that song. He said it was the perfect country song, but it didn't have anything about mama, or prison....".
This is a recording of Steve Goodman playing that song at a radio station to promote it. (Slow entry, 20 seconds of silence)

John Prine helped Steve Goodman write it but he gets little credit for the help.

IIRC Prine asked to have his name removed as a co-writer because he felt the song was too goofy and might offend the country music community.

He was/is an American treasure. Not many know he wrote this one:

I knew he wrote that song, but have never heard that version. Mr. Burns mandolin groove on that was insanely great.

Not surprised you knew, but most think Arlo Guthrie. Looks like Ole Jethro was sippin moonshine that night. They're both loving it. Goodman got dealt a bad hand with the cancer, but always had that ear to ear grin.

After making money on the song he paid John Prine by buying him a jukebox.
A GREAT album is the two disc/vinyl compilation that's half live/half studio.

The above album contains the most entertaining cut of "You Never Even..." in a live performance. He asks the crowd for a cowboy hat to perform the song and someone gives him a motorcycle helmet instead. So he starts with "Born to be Wild", then moves on to car songs, then car songs with people dying, then he goes into "dead girl" songs.
He was quite the musical comedian in his time and even opened for Steve Martin back when Martin was the top standup filling arenas.
Worth the listen.

Here's a full set of Steve Goodman at Capitol Theater in 1976. Had no idea he could shred a guitar.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Oct. 10, 2023 – This weekend, the family of John Prine donated his storied 1942 Wurlitzer jukebox to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s collection. The jukebox, which is now on display in the museum’s galleries, was a gift to Prine from his friend and fellow singer-songwriter Steve Goodman, who wanted to thank him for co-writing Goodman’s first country hit, “You Never Even Called Me by My Name.” Prine refused to take credit or accept any royalties for the song.
Not just any old jukebox either.
That thing is a work of art.
