Wow I really missed the boat on ELO

I'm 27, so it's not like they were huge in my lifetime. I feel like when you get to that age around midteens where you start getting introduced to the classics people start with the standards; the beatles, floyd, zeppelin, etc. And don't get me wrong, the limited ELO I had heard me and my friends all loved, but it was just the radio friendly songs like Don't Bring me Down, Turn to Stone, Sweet talkin woman, etc.
Well..this past week at work I've had some down time in the mornings since I've been the only one in the whole building the first 4 hours of the day. So I decided to get on youtube and just start moving through albums. I did some research and decided I wanted to dive a little deeper into ELO and man...I am kicking myself for waiting so long. I went in order and knocked out On the 3rd day, eldorado, face the music, a new world record, and out of the blue. Holy shite, I'm blown away. I mean obviously the sound of the music was no surprise, because it's unique to ELO and pretty distinct. But there were so many songs that I am now in love with that I had never heard before. I feel like I could listen to FTM and OOTB all day!
What are the board's thoughts? Great band that get their due, underrated, overrated?

i like them. need to do like you and explore more of their other songs besides the classics.

dude you won't regret it. Check out FTM and OOTB first to get a taste. And the good thing is most of those early albums (ending before OOTB) are pretty short, like under 40 minutes.

one of my favorite bands. you should check out The Move as well.
Time is one of ELO's more underrated albums, imo. came after their big success, so i would imagine by the 80s people were getting sick out their sound, but Time has some of my favorite jeff lynne tunes:

They were wildly popular back in the seventies. They struggled to find footing as their disco flavored hits couldn't find footing with onset of 80's 'new wave'.
Jeff Lynne was hugely influenced by the Beatles, as you can hear in many of his hits.
I always considered ELO light and Roxy Music dark

one of my favorite bands growing up. I still have the vinyl of New World Record and the rest of the old stuff. Xanadu-du when I stopped listening.

Brian Eno was amazing (as a solo artist in his own right) and actually said that Roxys next two albums after he left after the second Roxy album were his favorites
I mean Roxy gave us Mother of Pearl after Eno

I saw them at LSU when I was a wee lad.
My 9year old daughter listens to Mr. Blue Sky over and over.
Some of the best, most melodic, pure pop ever made.

concerto for a rainy day.....which mr blue sky is the crescendo.....is an awesome 1/2 album
